Cocoa country with a record-setting basilica

Travellers who look for cheap flights to Ivory Coast usually want a vibrant city, weekend-style beaches and big nature, all in one French-speaking country.

World number one for cocoa

As of 2023 the country was the largest exporter of cocoa beans in the world, and coffee is also a major export.

A basilica that rivals St Peter's

The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro is 158 m high with a dome 90 m wide, against about 41 m for St Peter's in Rome. Guinness lists it as the largest church in the world.

Rainforest and savanna parks

Tai National Park holds the largest tropical rainforest in West Africa, and Comoe is the biggest and best-known park, with elephants, giraffes and lions.

A UNESCO colonial town

Grand-Bassam, a short trip from Abidjan, was inscribed in 2012 for its colonial architecture and is a favourite weekend escape for locals.

Abidjan, Grand-Bassam, Yamoussoukro and the national parks

The sensible first itinerary starts in Abidjan, adds a beach day or two and, with time, the basilica or one of the parks.

Abidjan

Abidjan is the largest city and the real centre of government and business, home to foreign embassies. It offers a modern skyline, markets, nightlife, with Banco National Park right by the city. Roads in town are very good, which makes getting around by car or taxi straightforward.

Grand-Bassam and the coast

A colonial coastal town, Grand-Bassam is where Abidjan residents go for the weekend. It is about 43 km east of the city, with wooden colonial houses, a wharf and a lighthouse built in 1901. San Pedro, in the southwest, is the country's second port city.

Yamoussoukro

The official capital since 1983 is a quiet town in the interior. The basilica was consecrated by Pope John Paul II on 10 September 1990 and holds about 18,000 people, 7,000 of them seated.

Tai, Comoe and the west

Tai National Park is the largest tropical rainforest in West Africa, and Comoe National Park is the country's biggest and best-known reserve, with birds, elephants, giraffes, lions, monkeys and antelopes. Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve completes the trio of natural World Heritage sites. Some regions, especially in the north and west, are subject to official travel warnings, so check before heading inland.

Orange taxis, intercity buses and checkpoints

Orange taxis in Abidjan cost about two to four dollars for a typical ride, but agree the fare before you get in. Intercity buses are relatively modern, though frequent military checkpoints can add hours to a journey.

Having your own vehicle is easiest around Abidjan. Avoid night driving, when pedestrians and unlit vehicles are a hazard.

Citizens of ECOWAS countries and some others may get a visa on arrival, while many other travellers apply for an e-visa online before the trip. Proof of yellow fever vaccination may be requested, tap water is not drinkable and a hepatitis A vaccine is suggested.

Cheap local meals, pricey rooms

Food is cheap, with garba, alloco and attieke among the dishes to look for, while accommodation is generally expensive. Fan-cooled rooms start at around CFA 6,000 and air-conditioned rooms around CFA 10,000. ATMs in urban areas usually accept Visa and Mastercard, but carry cash for markets.
