Why visit Sierra Leone
Beaches, forests, the story of Freetown and a warm welcome
Beaches that are still quiet
On the Freetown Peninsula, Tokeh, River No. 2 and other beaches line up golden sand, coconut palms, fishing canoes and warm water. The country remains almost untouched by mass tourism.
A great natural harbour
Freetown climbs its hills above one of the world's largest natural harbours; it was founded in 1792 by freed former enslaved people, and its history can be read in its streets.
Forests and primates
In the south and east, Tiwai Island, a 12 km² sanctuary on the Moa River, and Gola Rainforest National Park, over 71,000 hectares, protect wildlife-rich tropical forest.
A history to understand
Bunce Island, upriver from Freetown, preserves the ruins of a 17th-century fort tied to the slave trade: a sober place of memory, to be visited with respect.
Highlights
Tokeh, River No. 2, Freetown, islands and forests
A trip to Sierra Leone is usually built around Freetown and the peninsula beaches, then opens out to islands and inland forests. Here are the stops to dream about.
Tokeh, the long golden beach
A short distance from Freetown, Tokeh curves in a long sweep of golden sand, with coconut palms, fishing canoes at anchor and seaside lodges. It is the place for slow days: swimming, walks along the water, grilled fish for lunch.

River No. 2, white sand between mangroves and hills
At River No. 2 a river meets the sea at the foot of forested hills: white sand, sandbanks at low tide, mangroves and colourful canoes. The wild, photogenic setting owes as much to nature as to the villagers, who live from fishing.

Freetown, the colourful city on the hills
Freetown climbs the hills facing the Atlantic: colourful houses, busy markets, museums and streets that tell the story of its founders, freed former enslaved people. Allow a day or two, ideally at dawn or late in the day when the light is soft.

The Banana Islands and Bunce Island
Off the peninsula, the Banana Islands, reached by boat, ferry or helicopter, offer beaches and small forests. Upriver from Freetown, Bunce Island keeps the ruins of a 17th-century fort tied to the slave trade: a serious and moving visit.
Tiwai, Gola and the inland forests
Tiwai Island, on the Moa River, is a sanctuary where you can watch primates; Gola Rainforest National Park protects over 71,000 hectares of tropical forest. These stops need more time and logistics, but they add a nature dimension to a beach holiday.
Before you go
The dry season, November to April, for the beaches
| Area | Climate | Best time |
|---|---|---|
| Freetown Peninsula beaches | Warm all year; sunny dry season, rain from May to October. | November to April |
| Freetown | Hot and humid; dusty harmattan in the middle of the northern winter. | November to April |
| Banana Islands and Bunce Island | Boat crossings are more pleasant in calm seas. | November to April |
| Forests (Tiwai, Gola) | Humid tropical forest; trails easier in the dry season. | December to March |
The rainy season, May to October, slows roads and crossings. Entry requirements vary by nationality; yellow fever vaccination should be checked before departure, and medical advice on malaria is recommended. Consult your home country's official advice.
Getting around
Boat from the airport, taxis and private drivers
The international airport is at Lungi, across the estuary from Freetown: you cross by ferry, water taxi or road. Allow plenty of slack at both ends of your trip, and arrange your transfer in advance through your accommodation.
On the ground, shared taxis, private drivers and boat transfers are the usual options. Roads and crossings can be slow, so a local driver is valuable for reaching the beaches and forests.
Food and culture
Rice, cassava leaf stew, grilled fish and fruit
Rice goes with every meal, served with palm oil sauces, fish or chicken, and cassava leaf stew is a signature dish. Plantains, peanuts, ginger and tropical fruit, mangoes, pineapples and papayas, round out the table.
On the beach, nothing beats freshly grilled fish. English is the official language and Krio, the local creole, is spoken everywhere; a few words of greeting are always appreciated.
