A mountain lake, yurts, treks and the Silk Road

A small sea at 1,600 m

Lake Issyk-Kul spans more than 6,000 km2 at about 1,600 m above sea level and does not freeze in winter. Its northern beaches and wild southern shore face the snowy Tian Shan.

Nomadic life, for real

The yurt is the country's emblem, right down to the flag. In summer you sleep with herding families, taste kumis and ride across the pastures.

Mountains within walking reach

More than nine tenths of the land lies above 1,500 m. High valleys, hot springs and perched lakes such as Song-Kol make treks anything from a day walk to weeks of self-reliance.

A stop on the Silk Road

Stone caravanserais like Tash Rabat, the Burana Tower, the petroglyphs of Saimaluu-Tash: the history of caravans and nomad empires is still visible on the ground.

Issyk-Kul, Karakol, Tian Shan pastures and Tash Rabat

A trip to Kyrgyzstan is usually built around Bishkek, the arrival point, then a loop to Issyk-Kul and Karakol, with time in the pastures and, if the weather allows, a detour to Song-Kol or Tash Rabat. The good season runs from June to September.

Lake Issyk-Kul, beaches and mountains

At 6,332 km2 and 702 m deep, Issyk-Kul is one of the largest mountain lakes in the world. Slightly salty, it does not freeze in winter. The northern shore has beaches and holiday villages around Cholpon-Ata; the wilder southern shore runs past gorges and valleys. Sunrise and sunset here are superb.

Karakol, green valleys and hot springs

Karakol, east of the lake, is the starting point for many treks: spruce-lined valleys, glacial rivers, hot springs and meadows where you can sleep in a yurt. In winter the region becomes a quiet ski destination.

Tian Shan pastures on horseback

In the Tian Shan's high pastures, herds of horses and sheep spend the summer under the peaks, and shepherds gladly welcome visitors. A day on horseback is enough to feel the rhythm of the country.

Tash Rabat, a stone caravanserai

Set in a high valley of the Naryn region, Tash Rabat is a stone caravanserai, a relic of the Silk Road routes that crossed the passes. A sunset over the pastures adds to the calm of the place.

Bishkek, Osh and history

The capital Bishkek offers wide avenues, parks and markets, with the Ala-Archa mountains close by. Osh, in the south and much older, lives around its great bazaar and the Sulaiman-Too mountain. The Burana Tower near Tokmok recalls an ancient Central Asian capital.

Weather changes quickly at altitude, so pack warm layers even in summer. Entry rules vary by nationality; check your own government's official travel information before fixing dates. Watch fares to aim for July and August, which are in high demand.

Shared taxis, minibuses and a car with driver

Between Bishkek, Issyk-Kul and Karakol, minibuses (marshrutkas) and shared taxis are very practical. For remote valleys, Song-Kol or Tash Rabat, a car with a driver or an all-terrain vehicle with a local guide is the safest choice.

Mountain roads are long and slowed by passes; Bishkek to Karakol takes about a day of travel. The two halves of the country connect only through high passes, so do not chain too many stages into one week.

Beshbarmak, lagman, kumis and yurt hospitality

The national dish is beshbarmak, boiled meat on noodles. You will also find lagman noodle soup, plov, manti dumplings and hot samsas. The traditional drink is kumis, fermented mare's milk; black tea accompanies every meal.

Nomadic culture is alive: felt-making, the Epic of Manas, equestrian games, the World Nomad Games. In a yurt you remove your shoes and happily accept the tea and bread you are offered.
