Why visit Timor-Leste
Coral reefs, beaches, mountains and highland coffee
Some of the richest reefs
At the tip of the Coral Triangle, the country offers exceptional diving and snorkelling, especially around Atauro Island, often with excellent visibility.
Near-empty beaches
White sand, turquoise water and coconut palms: from the Dili coast to the islands of the east, you find beaches where you meet more fishermen than tourists.
Mountains to climb at dawn
Mount Ramelau, at 2,963 m, is climbed at night for a sunrise above the clouds, among highland villages and coffee plantations.
A stop off the beaten track
Portuguese heritage, churches, forts and markets: a country still little visited, where travel is simple and there is time to meet people.
Highlights
Dili, Atauro, Jaco, Mount Ramelau and the east coast
A stay in Timor-Leste is built around Dili, the capital, from where you branch out to Atauro Island, the mountains of the interior and the east coast. The dry season, May to November, is the best for travelling and walking.
Dili, the bay and the Cristo Rei
The capital stretches along a bay lined with dry hills. A seafront walk, cafes, markets and Areia Branca beach invite a wander. At the end of the corniche, the Cristo Rei statue, reached by about 500 steps, overlooks the bay and offers one of the country's finest viewpoints.

Atauro and Jaco, diving and beaches
A few hours by ferry from Dili, Atauro Island is the great meeting point for divers: intact reefs, coral walls and fish in huge numbers. At the far east, the uninhabited island of Jaco, in Nino Konis Santana National Park, is edged with white-sand beaches. Lodging stays simple, often eco-style.

Mount Ramelau and the highlands
The country's highest point, at 2,963 m, is reached by an early-morning hike from Hato Builico to watch the sunrise. In Maubisse, villages and coffee plantations have a fresh mountain feel; further on, the Marobo hot springs are a place to relax after the walk.
Baucau and the east coast
East of Dili, Baucau charms with its Portuguese colonial-style buildings and sea views. Further on, Com, Lospalos and Tutuala open onto beaches and coastal forests that are still wild, ideal territory for birdwatchers.
Whales, dolphins and coffee
Off the north coast, more than twenty species of cetaceans have been recorded; the watching season runs from October to December. Coffee, grown at altitude, is a local pride: you can taste it right in the producer villages.
Before you go
May to November for the dry season
| Area | Climate | Best time |
|---|---|---|
| Dili and north coast | Tropical, 25 to 33 C; a marked dry season. | May to November |
| Atauro and diving | Warm water all year, good visibility. | May to November |
| Mount Ramelau and highlands | Cooler, chilly nights, morning mist possible. | May to October |
| Wet season | Lush vegetation, but tracks can be impassable. | Roughly November to April |
The climate is tropical, with a dry and a wet season; pack a warm layer for the highlands. Entry conditions depend on your nationality; check the official information from your home country before fixing dates. Watch prices to aim for the dry season.
Getting around
Taxis, microlets and 4x4
In Dili, taxis and microlets, small minibuses, are enough. Elsewhere, buses and pick-ups serve towns, but departures are often very early in the morning. Hiring a 4x4 with a driver is most comfortable for exploring the highlands; traffic drives on the left.
Roads are rough and lodging is simple outside the capital: keep your schedule flexible. For Atauro, check ferry times in advance, since the sea can change crossings.
Food and culture
Fish, rice, coffee and Portuguese heritage
Timorese food rests on rice, maize, cassava and grilled or fried fish, seasoned with spices, with plenty of tropical fruit. In Dili you also find Portuguese, Italian and Asian restaurants. Highland coffee is well regarded and enjoyed in the capital's cafes as well as at producers.
The country is mostly Catholic, and churches, forts and colonial architecture recall the Portuguese heritage. Tais, traditional woven cloths, make a good souvenir.
