Airport and border
A small airport and the Eilat border a few minutes away
Taba International (TCP)
Taba airport is about 16 km north-west of town according to Wikipedia (DE). Wikivoyage says it has very few international flights and no domestic ones (as of March 2020) and that there is no public transport into town: you need a taxi or a hotel transfer. Check current connections before booking.
Approximate distances and times, based on Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (DE); schedules change. We do not quote fares.
Other entry points
Many travellers arrive through another airport: Ramon, about 20 km north of Eilat (Israel), or Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH), from where a bus takes about four hours via Dahab and Nuweiba according to Wikivoyage. Cairo is about eight hours away by bus.
The border with Israel
Taba adjoins Eilat, about 6 km away according to Wikipedia (DE): the two border posts are around 150 m apart, and crossing takes about an hour depending on queues (Wikivoyage). Formalities, exit fees and opening hours change: check official sites. The Sinai coastal zone is often open without a visa for up to 15 days for many nationalities, but check yours.
A unique setting and recent history
Sinai meets the sea at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba
Taba, at the far north of Egypt's Red Sea Riviera, is one of the few places where the mountainous Sinai desert drops straight into a calm sea. The town is tiny (800 inhabitants in 2006 according to Wikipedia FR) and lives mostly from the border crossing and its resorts. It was the last territory returned to Egypt: an international arbitration awarded it to Egypt in 1988, and the Egyptian flag was raised there on 19 March 1989 (Wikipedia DE).
The bay and its mountains
South of Taba the coast alternates blue bays and dark cliffs: straw shelters and small jetties serve as access points to the sea. The contrast between brown rock and the calm water of the gulf is the area's strength for those who prefer nature to the bustle of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Beaches and hotels
The beaches are mostly those of the resorts, often with ochre sand and very clear water. Taba Heights, about 20 km away according to Wikipedia (FR), groups several large international hotels; hotels closer to the border are more geared towards Israeli weekend visitors.

Pharaoh's Island
About 250 metres offshore, Pharaoh's Island holds the ruins of a medieval fortress known as Saladin's Castle, which served as a trading post, then as a Crusader stronghold before Saladin took it. Wikivoyage says you go by boat and that entry is inexpensive, with variable opening hours. The 1906 "Taba crisis" between the British and Ottoman empires had already led to the drawing of a formal border.
Excursions and distances
Coloured Canyon, Nuweiba, Dahab, Sharm and Aqaba
Coloured Canyon and desert
About 40 metres high, the Coloured Canyon owes its multicoloured rock to centuries of rain and flash floods; it is the signature hiking and jeep-safari site of this part of Sinai. Quad bikes, desert safaris and camel rides complete the trips into the interior, best booked through reliable local operators.
Towards Nuweiba, Dahab and Sharm
From Taba the coast road follows the gulf to Nuweiba, then Dahab, a backpacker and diving hub, and finally Sharm el-Sheikh (about four hours by bus from Sharm according to Wikivoyage). Bus schedules from Taba are unreliable: a taxi or an organised transfer is better.
Aqaba and Jordan
Ferries link Nuweiba or Taba Heights with Aqaba, which lets you bypass Israel; Wikivoyage mentions them as an alternative. Schedules and formalities change: check them before building an itinerary.
Museums and heritage
Few museums: the heritage is mostly outdoors
Saladin's Castle
The main heritage site is the fortress on Pharaoh's Island. The visit is short, but the boat trip and the view over the gulf make it a pleasant outing.
A poorly documented museum
Wikivoyage mentions a large Taba museum near a hotel entrance that "seems to have been closed": do not make it a reason to travel, and ask locally. We found no other documented museum in town.
Bedouin culture and nature
Cultural interest lies more in the Bedouin villages and camps of the coast and in the protected area south-west of Taba, covering around 3,590 km² of valleys, caves and mountain passes according to Wikipedia (ES). Outings are made with a local guide.
Food and drink
Hotel restaurants, grills and mint tea
Where to eat
Dining is concentrated in the hotels and at Taba Heights, whose Uptown district has restaurants, cafés and shops: Egyptian, Mexican, Asian or Indian cooking. Small eateries stand near the bus station, according to Wikivoyage.
Specialities
In Sinai people mostly eat grills, Red Sea fish, mezze and fresh bread. Hotel restaurants cost more than small local places.
Drinks
Mint tea or Bedouin tea is drunk at any hour; tap water is not drinkable, so drink bottled water. Alcohol is served mainly in hotels.
Getting around
Taxis, hotel shuttles and unreliable buses
Taxis and shuttles
There is no public transport network in Taba. People get around by taxi, rental car or hotel shuttle. Agree the price before setting off.
Buses
Buses usually leave in the afternoon for Cairo, Nuweiba, Dahab and Sharm, but Wikivoyage considers their timetables unreliable: ask at the bus station the day before.
From Eilat
Israeli buses link Eilat to the border, according to Wikivoyage, and a short taxi ride is possible. The rest of the journey on the Egyptian side is by taxi.
Budget and precautions
A moderate budget, mostly driven by accommodation
Price level
Taba is a mid-range destination for the Red Sea: accommodation is the main cost, often as all-inclusive packages. We do not quote prices, because those we found are dated and not cross-checked.
Flights
The flight is the most variable cost. SniperAir tracks fares to TCP and compares them with the route's history, but does not sell or book tickets. Sharm (SSH) and Ramon (ETM) are other airports worth watching.
Security and travel advice
Sinai has seen attacks, including at Taba in 2004 and 2014 (Wikipedia FR, DE). Official advice for the region changes and varies by country: read your foreign ministry's before booking, stay on main roads and avoid isolated border areas. At sea, do not drift towards the border.

Climate figures
Average highs range from about 21 °C in January to 40 °C in July, and lows from about 9 °C to 25 °C, with around 6 rainy days a year and very high sunshine, according to Wikipedia (DE), which gives no source. The area is very dry: rain is rare but can cause flash floods in canyons.
