A state, not a city
A Goa beach holiday, the easy way into India
Goa is not a city but India's smallest state. Its capital is Panaji, also called Panjim, and its largest city is Vasco da Gama. For many travelers, a Goa beach holiday is the easiest first taste of India: sandy beaches, casual beachwear, alcohol widely available and comfortable places to stay. It also pairs well with a trip to Kerala or Rajasthan.
What sets Goa apart is its past. It is the only Indian state shaped by Portuguese rule, which lasted from 1510 to 1961. That history shows in its baroque churches, pastel villas, bread and a large Christian community, and in "susegad", the local art of taking life slowly.
Pick your coast
North Goa or South Goa?
| North Goa | South Goa | |
|---|---|---|
| Mood | Nightlife, markets and parties | Calm and quiet bays |
| Beaches | Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Arambol | Palolem, Patnem, Agonda, Colva, Varca |

The north, beach by beach
Baga is the place for nightlife and water sports, Calangute is the largest and most commercial beach, and Anjuna is the bohemian hub, with its trance parties and Wednesday flea market. Further north, Arambol has gentle waves and a freshwater lake, a good choice for families.
The south
Crescent bays and silent discos
Palolem, Patnem, Agonda
Palolem is a crescent bay known for its silent-disco nights. Next door, Patnem is quieter, with a focus on yoga, and Agonda is a peaceful favorite of couples. Varca is lined with luxury resorts.

Old Goa
Baroque churches listed by UNESCO
The Churches and Convents of Goa were listed by UNESCO in 1986. The Basilica of Bom Jesus, consecrated in 1605, holds the relics of St Francis Xavier, which are brought out for public exposition about every ten years; his feast is celebrated on 3 December. Nearby, the Se Cathedral, seat of the Archbishop, is described as one of the largest churches in Asia.
Old Goa was once a large city before epidemics emptied it, and the capital moved to Panaji in 1843. In Panaji, walk through the Fontainhas quarter. On the coast, Fort Aguada is a 17th-century Portuguese fort.
Inland
Dudhsagar Falls in the Western Ghats
Away from the beaches, Dudhsagar is a four-tier waterfall over 300 m high in the Western Ghats, about 60 km from Panaji. Walking along the railway track is banned and fined.
Goan food
Vindaloo, xacuti and feni
Goan cooking is built on rice and fish, with ingredients the Portuguese brought: cashew, pineapple, chilli and potato. There are two traditions. Hindu cooking is pescatarian, with tamarind and coconut oil, while Catholic cooking uses toddy vinegar and pork.
Try vindaloo, sorpotel, xacuti, cafreal and balchao, finish with bebinca, and taste feni.
