A big city, honestly
Indonesia's capital and its biggest city
Jakarta sits on the north-west coast of Java, at the mouth of the Ciliwung river and facing the Java Sea. Nicknamed the Big Durian, it is a huge, layered, sweltering metropolis: the greater urban area is home to tens of millions of people, with no single ethnic majority. Javanese, Betawi, Sundanese and Chinese Indonesians all call it home, and it hosts the ASEAN secretariat.
A new capital in the making
Indonesia is building a new capital, Nusantara, on Borneo, a project announced in 2019. Jakarta remains the country's biggest city and the arrival point for many international flights.
Kota Tua
Kota Tua: old Batavia and the harbor where the city began
Taman Fatahillah, museums and Sunda Kelapa
The pedestrian Old Town around Taman Fatahillah square holds the Jakarta History Museum in the former Stadhuis, the Bank Indonesia Museum, the Wayang Museum and the Fine Arts and Ceramics Museum. Nearby are the VOC Shipyard, dating from 1628, and the harbor of Sunda Kelapa, where traditional schooners still dock and where the city began in 1527.

Monuments and museums
Monas, Istiqlal and the National Museum
National Monument (Monas)
An obelisk topped with a gold-leaf flame, begun in 1961 under Sukarno and opened in 1975, with a museum in its base and an observation deck. It stands on Merdeka Square, a space of about one square kilometer.
Istiqlal Mosque and Jakarta Cathedral
Istiqlal is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and was designed by a Christian architect. It faces the neo-Gothic Jakarta Cathedral across the way.
National Museum
Hindu sculpture, a treasure room and an elephant statue given by the King of Siam in 1871. Nearby, the Proclamation Museum recalls Indonesia's independence.
Parks and leisure
Ragunan Zoo has orangutans, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah presents all of the country's provinces, Ancol Dream Park is the seaside amusement area and Setu Babakan is a Betawi cultural village.

Food and culture
Betawi cuisine, specialty coffee and mall food courts
Betawi culture mixes Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and Arab influences, and the food shows it: try soto betawi and soto tangkar. Jakarta also has one of the best specialty coffee scenes in the region, with kopi susu gula aren the local favorite. Food courts in malls are a cheap and air-conditioned way to eat well.
