Airport and getting into town
AMM, Queen Alia International Airport, south of the capital
Queen Alia International Airport (AMM)
It sits in Zizya, about 30 km south of Amman per Wikipedia (EN); it was built in 1983 and a new terminal opened in March 2013 per the same source. Wikivoyage (EN) lists an hourly airport express bus that takes 45 to 60 minutes to reach the north bus station, fixed-fare airport taxis, and Uber or Careem. We give no fares, which change.
Approximate distance per Wikipedia (EN, FR). The older Marka airport (ADJ) handles occasional regional or private flights: check the airport on your ticket.
Amman is Jordan's capital and largest city, with more than four million people per Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (DE); figures vary by year. It spreads across hills roughly 700 to 1,100 m above sea level per Wikipedia (EN). Wikivoyage treats it less as a city packed with sights than as an easy base for Jerash, Madaba, Mount Nebo, the Dead Sea and Petra.
Landmarks and sights
The Citadel, Roman theatre, Umayyad Palace and the souq
Amman was Rabbath Ammon, then Philadelphia under the Greeks and Romans, and the Citadel hill shows more than 7,000 years of settlement per Wikivoyage (EN). Five images illustrate the city; mosques and the souq are described in text.
The Citadel and the Temple of Hercules
Jabal al-Qal'a overlooks downtown: the Roman-era columns of the Temple of Hercules, a Byzantine church and an archaeological museum stand here per Wikivoyage (EN, FR). Wikivoyage recommends the viewpoint near the Citadel at sunset, when the call to prayer carries over the city.

The Umayyad Palace
In the northern part of the Citadel, the Umayyad Palace dates from about 720 per Wikivoyage (DE), and an earthquake in 749 badly damaged it per the same source. It is one of the few traces of Umayyad Amman and offers a fine view of the city per Wikivoyage (EN).

The Roman theatre from above
Cut into the hillside under Antoninus Pius, it could seat about 6,000 people per Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (DE), and remains one of the best preserved ancient buildings in the region. The paved square in front is a downtown meeting point.

The seats from the square
From ground level the stone seating rises in tiers to the hill. Beside it, two small museums cover folklore and popular traditions per Wikivoyage (EN); the theatre ticket may include them, but fees change.

A dense city on its hills
At dusk the pale-stone city spreads over its hills, from the older eastern districts to the towers in the west. Wikipedia (EN) notes that Amman was first built on seven hills and now covers nineteen.

Mosques and the souq, in text
The King Abdullah I Mosque, with its large blue dome, is a major modern landmark per Wikipedia (ES). The Abu Darwish Mosque is recognisable by its black-and-white striped walls per Wikivoyage (EN). The downtown souq, the Balad, mixes spice stalls, clothes and small shops. Respect places of worship: dress modestly and keep a low profile.
Museums and culture
The Jordan Museum, art galleries and smaller museums
The Jordan Museum
Wikivoyage (EN) calls it a modern, well-kept museum with a good summary of the country's history; Wikipedia (ES) says it is the largest in Jordan. It displays, among other things, a copper scroll from the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Mesha Stele. Check opening days, which vary.
Archaeological Museum on the Citadel
Located on the Citadel, it shows antiquities from all over Jordan, from prehistory to the 15th century per Wikipedia (ES). It is the natural stop to pair with the ruins.
Galleries and specialised museums
Darat al Funun, set in 1920s villas in Jabal al-Weibdeh, and the National Gallery of Fine Arts show contemporary art per Wikivoyage (EN). Wikipedia (DE) also lists the Royal Automobile Museum, the Royal Tank Museum and a numismatic museum. We give no fees, which change.
Food and drink
Mansaf, hummus, falafel and kunafa
The national dish
Mansaf, lamb cooked in a dried-yoghurt sauce and served on rice, is Jordan's speciality per Wikivoyage (EN, FR). It is traditionally eaten by hand per Wikivoyage (EN).
Everyday eating
Shawarma, hummus, falafel and ful make the simple, cheap standard meal per Wikivoyage (EN). Downtown has hummus places packed with locals, including a well-known institution on King Faisal Street per Wikivoyage (FR). The classic dessert is kunafa, a hot cheese and semolina pastry.
Drinks and timing
Mint tea, sugar-cane juice and shisha in downtown cafes; arak, an aniseed spirit, and Petra beer are sold in shops and bars on Rainbow Street and in Abdoun per Wikivoyage (EN). During Ramadan it is almost impossible to buy food in daylight, so plan ahead.
Getting around
Meter taxis, ride-hailing, buses and BRT
Taxis and ride-hailing
Yellow and grey taxis, with a green logo for Amman ones, must use a meter per Wikivoyage (EN); Uber and Careem also operate. Be wary of offers of a free short ride to a site, which end in an inflated fare per the same source.
Buses and BRT
Municipal buses and a bus rapid transit line link downtown and the north bus station per Wikivoyage (EN, DE). Many buses show their destination only in Arabic per Wikivoyage (EN), so keep place names written in Arabic.
Hills and walking
Roads are steep and built for cars: a walk that looks short on a map can take much longer per Wikivoyage (EN, FR). JETT buses to Aqaba and Petra leave from the Raghadan tourist station near the Roman theatre per Wikivoyage (DE).
Budget and precautions
Mid-range prices, higher in the west
Price level
The currency is the Jordanian dinar (JOD). Simple meals downtown are affordable, while hotels and restaurants in the western districts and Abdali cost more per Wikivoyage (EN). We publish no figures: sources are dated or disagree.
Entry rules
Foreign visitors should check visa and entry rules for Jordan for their nationality, and whether a tourist pass is worthwhile. Rules change: check the official Jordan visitor portal and your foreign ministry's information.
General precautions
Before you go, check your foreign ministry's travel advice, take out travel insurance and dress modestly at places of worship. SniperAir tracks flight prices to AMM and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets.

Summer (June to August)
