Yangon, also known as Rangoon, is the largest city in Myanmar and its economic hub. It was the country's capital until 2005-2006, when the administration moved to Naypyidaw, about 320 km to the north (Wikipedia, EN, FR). It has more than 5 million inhabitants according to Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (DE). Wikipedia (EN) says it has the largest number of colonial-era buildings in Southeast Asia, clustered around the Sule Pagoda, and the Shwedagon Pagoda dominates its skyline.
Important: Myanmar's political situation has changed deeply since the coup of February 2021. Wikivoyage (EN, DE) mentions armed conflict, a state of emergency and martial law in large parts of the country, and Wikivoyage (ES) notes that many governments advise against travelling there. Official advice varies by country of departure; before any trip, check your own government's official information on entry rules, accessible regions, insurance and payment methods. SniperAir monitors flight prices to Yangon (RGN) and alerts you; it does not sell or book tickets and does not replace that advice.
Airport and getting into town
Mingaladon airport, about twenty kilometres out
Yangon International Airport (RGN)
Yangon International Airport is in Mingaladon, about 19 km north of the centre according to Wikipedia (FR, DE). Wikivoyage (EN) allows around 30 minutes by road, and up to 1 h 30 at rush hour. Direct flights have been listed from Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi, Vientiane, Phnom Penh, Seoul and several Chinese cities; routes have changed a lot since 2021, so check before booking.
Approximate distances and times from Wikipedia (FR, DE) and Wikivoyage (EN); routes change. We do not quote taxi fares because the amounts cited date from different years.
To reach the centre, Wikivoyage (EN) lists a taxi, the Grab app or a public bus. Taxi drivers at arrivals may ask inflated fares: agree the price before getting in or use an app.
Wikivoyage (EN) says that because of the ongoing conflict, entering Myanmar overland ranges from difficult to impossible, and getting to Yangon from border regions can also be complicated. For air or land travel alike, check official advice before planning.
Landmarks and icons
The Shwedagon, City Hall and Kandawgyi Lake
Founded as Dagon by the Mon, the town was renamed Yangon in 1755 by King Alaungpaya and became the capital of British Burma after 1852 (Wikipedia, EN, FR). These are the places pictured below.
Shwedagon Pagoda
Wikivoyage (EN) calls it the most important religious site in Myanmar. The gold-covered stupa stands on Singuttara Hill, about 51 m above the city, and is close to 100 m tall (Wikipedia, EN, FR). King Hsinbyushin raised it again after the 1768 earthquake. Four covered stairways lead up to it, and large chinthe guardian lions stand at the south entrance (Wikipedia, DE).

The pagoda platform
Around the stupa, the paved platform is ringed by a forest of small pagodas and four larger shrines at the cardinal points (Wikipedia, FR). Wikivoyage (EN) describes it as one of the best places in the world to sit and watch people. Late-day light is the most beautiful, but the atmosphere is devotional: dress modestly and go barefoot.

City Hall
Built between 1926 and 1936, Yangon City Hall is one of the landmark buildings of the colonial centre (Wikivoyage, EN). The grid of downtown streets was laid out after 1852 by engineers Fraser and Montgomerie beside the river (Wikipedia, FR). Wikipedia (DE) adds that the old building stock is under heavy threat from neglect and speculation.

Kandawgyi Lake and the Karaweik
Formerly Victoria Lake, Kandawgyi is a renovated park north-east of the centre for strolling (Wikivoyage, EN). Its famous gilded barge with two bird-shaped prows, the Karaweik, houses a restaurant and shows, and the lakeshore is a favourite walk for locals.

Also worth seeing: the Sule Pagoda in the middle of the central junction, a reference point of the colonial plan (Wikipedia, DE), Botataung Pagoda by the river, Bogyoke Aung San Market, Holy Trinity Cathedral and the synagogue built in 1893 (Wikivoyage, EN).
Museums and culture
Homes of national heroes, parks and migrant quarters
Museums
Wikivoyage (EN) lists the Bogyoke Aung San Museum, the house of the independence hero kept in its original state, and a museum in People's Park, west of the Shwedagon. Hours change, so we do not publish them, and we do not quote fees.
Chinatown and Little India
The Chinese and Indian quarters recall colonial-era migration: Chinese clan temples, Hindu temples and shops (Wikivoyage, EN). Before the war, over half of the inhabitants were of Indian origin (Wikipedia, EN).
Colonial heritage
Wikipedia (EN) describes a remarkably intact colonial core. Wikipedia (DE) points out that the old buildings are under heavy threat. A walk through the centre shows this heritage, bearing in mind that routes can change with the situation.
Food and drink
Mixed cuisines, tea and night-time grills
A cuisine of blends
Wikivoyage (EN) explains that local food reflects the city's diversity: Bamar dishes, many Indian and Chinese restaurants, a few Shan places and a wide range of international cuisines.
Grills and tea shops
The barbecue stalls on 19th Street in Chinatown come alive in the early evening: you choose fish, meat or vegetables and they are grilled on the spot (Wikivoyage, EN). Tea shops serve tea and snacks all day.
Opening hours
Wikivoyage (EN) notes that many restaurants and stalls close early, around 20:00 or 21:00, so go around 19:00.
Getting around
Taxis, buses and the circular train
Taxis and apps
Wikivoyage (EN) presents the taxi as the easiest way around, with the price negotiated before the ride; the Grab app gives fixed fares. Wikivoyage (DE) says meters are rare.
Buses and train
The bus network is cheap but hard to understand, since signs are in Burmese (Wikivoyage, EN). The circular train, a 45.9 km loop with 39 stations, is used by locals (Wikipedia, DE) and Wikivoyage (EN) recommends it to see daily life. Check that it is running before counting on it.
River
A short ferry crosses to Dala; Wikivoyage (EN) also warns about scams in which an overly friendly stranger offers to show you around, sometimes towards Dala.
Budget and precautions
Low price levels, unstable figures
Price level
Wikivoyage (EN) notes that accommodation has become very cheap after tourist demand collapsed following 2021, and that many international chains have left. We give no ranges or fares: kyat amounts quoted by sources date from different years and contradict each other. Payments are in kyat; US dollars are accepted only in some cases.
Flights
Flights are the most variable item. SniperAir monitors prices to RGN and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. Bangkok, Hanoi or Siem Reap can complete your watch if you combine several stops.
Entry rules, situation and safety
Before any trip, check your own government's official information on entry rules, accessible regions, insurance and payment methods. Travel advice differs by country: some advise against travel, wholly or in part. Wikivoyage (EN) rates Yangon as fairly safe from petty crime but flags scams, money-changing tricks and fake monks; Wikivoyage (DE) advises bottled water and notes limited medical care.
Best time to go
Dry from November to April, monsoon from May to October
November to February
The dry and coolest season, the most pleasant for walking in town (Wikipedia, EN: dry season from November to April).
March to April
The end of the dry season is very hot: Wikivoyage (EN) mentions near 40 C at noon, with a high UV index.
May to October
The monsoon brings heavy rain; August is the wettest month according to Wikipedia (DE). Open sewers can overflow (Wikivoyage, EN).
All year
Yangon is exposed to cyclones: Nargis struck the city in May 2008 (Wikipedia, EN).
The climate is tropical monsoon: highs range from 29 to 36 C according to Wikipedia (EN), and the annual mean temperature is 27.5 C according to Wikipedia (DE). Sources give different rainfall totals, so we do not publish a precise figure. Check the forecast before you go.
