Airport and transfers
MCT, Muscat International Airport, west of the city
Muscat International Airport (MCT)
The airport, formerly called Seeb, lies west of the urban area: about 25 km from Ruwi according to Wikipedia (EN), roughly 32 km from the old town according to Wikivoyage (FR) and 37 km from Mutrah according to Wikivoyage (EN). To reach the city you can take a taxi, a ride-hailing app or a Mwasalat bus. Wikivoyage (EN, DE) gives a taxi range of about 6 to 12 Omani rials depending on the destination, to be agreed before you set off; an official counter allows prepayment. We do not quote any other fares.
Approximate distances from Wikipedia (EN) and Wikivoyage (FR, EN); they vary by district. Check schedules, routes and fares before you travel.
Muscat is really several towns grown together
Wikivoyage (EN, FR) describes the whole as three former centres: Old Muscat, the walled town with the royal palace; Mutrah, a former fishing village with its souq and corniche; and Ruwi, the business district. The governorate had about 1.7 million inhabitants in 2022 according to Wikipedia (EN). The city stretches between the sea and the Hajar mountains, and most hotels sit outside Old Muscat, so plan on taxi rides.
From other Omani cities
National coaches link Muscat with Nizwa (about 2 h 20), Sur (about 4 h 15) and Salalah (about 13 h) according to Wikivoyage (EN). For Salalah the plane is simpler: airlines run several daily flights.
Landmarks and sights
Grand Mosque, old Muscat, Mutrah and mountains
Muscat is different from other Gulf capitals: there is no ultramodern skyline, because new buildings are required to follow a traditional Arabic style according to Wikivoyage (EN). Six pictures illustrate the city; the forts and the souq are described in the text.
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
Opened in 2001 according to Wikipedia (FR) and Wikivoyage (DE), the mosque stands out with its lattice dome and a main minaret of 91.5 m according to Wikivoyage (DE). Non-Muslims can visit in the morning, Saturday to Thursday, according to the same source: check the hours before you go.

Courtyard, arcades and a pink minaret
The marble courtyard is lined with sandstone arcades and a pink-toned minaret within the same complex. Dress must cover arms and legs, women cover their hair and shoes come off at the entrance according to Wikivoyage (DE). Touching the walls or the Koran is not allowed.

A district between two hills
Muscat's white and beige houses crowd into rocky valleys, often under bare hills: the city is squeezed between the sea and the Western Hajar mountains according to Wikivoyage (EN). In the evening the golden light makes this view especially photogenic.

Rooftops and the bay
A high view over flat roofs and a bay edged by a corniche, with dry hills behind. The Mutrah corniche is among the most popular walks according to Wikivoyage (EN), with fishing dhows in the harbour; the fish market works early in the morning.

A dense district under the mountains
Low buildings with flat roofs, narrow streets and high rocky ridges make up the landscape. Wikipedia (EN) notes that the Hajar range dominates the view from the city, so you come here for stone silhouettes and white houses rather than skyscrapers.

Colourful facades and dry hills
In the coastal districts, pastel facades contrast with dry hills and the sea in the distance. The area gets very little rain: about 10 cm a year according to Wikipedia (EN), mostly between December and April, which explains the mineral landscape.

Jalali and Mirani forts, and the royal palace
In Old Muscat the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts face each other across the harbour. A legacy of the Portuguese period, they date from the 1580s according to Wikivoyage (EN). They are not open inside but look good from outside. The royal palace, Qasr Al Alam, can only be photographed from its entrance according to Wikivoyage (EN).
Mutrah and its souq
Mutrah Souq, a maze of covered lanes, is described by Wikivoyage (EN) as often called the best in the Gulf: jewellery, handicrafts, spices, incense and earthenware. Mutrah Fort overlooks the bay; visitors walk up the hill for the view without going inside.
Easy walks
Trail C38 links Riyam Park to Mutrah Souq in 1.5 to 2 hours according to Wikivoyage (EN); carry water, wear shoes with grip and do not start after 4 pm.
Museums and culture
Omani history, house museums and the Royal Opera House
National Museum of Oman
It tells the history and customs of the country from prehistory to today, with models and carefully displayed objects according to Wikivoyage (EN). It is the best introduction before heading into the interior. Hours and fees change: check the official site.
Bait Al Zubair and Bait al-Baranda
Two old houses turned into museums. Bait Al Zubair shows costumes, jewellery, weapons and everyday objects according to Wikipedia (FR); Bait al-Baranda, in a 1930s house in Mutrah, traces the history of the city according to Wikivoyage (EN).
Omani French Museum and Muscat Gate Museum
The first occupies the former residence of the French consuls and details relations between the two countries since the 18th century according to Wikipedia (FR). The Muscat Gate Museum marks the line of the old city wall.
Royal Opera House Muscat
Opened in October 2011 according to Wikipedia (FR), it hosts classical music, Arabic music, jazz and ballet according to Wikivoyage (EN). Check the official programme before you go.
Food and drink
Halwa, tea, fresh juice and cuisines from across Asia
Specialities and sweets
Omani halwa, a fragrant sweet, is made in Mutrah and near Barka according to Wikivoyage (EN). Dates, nuts and spices are sold in the souq; Arabic coffee with dates is part of the welcome.
Restaurants and other cuisines
The city has many Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Lebanese restaurants, notably in Ruwi and Al Khuwair, which house many foreign workers according to Wikivoyage (EN). Traditional Omani food is also served in a few dedicated restaurants.
Drinks
Milk tea (halib), sweet black tea (sulaimani) and fresh fruit juices are everywhere, often in small cafes along the corniche according to Wikivoyage (EN). Alcohol is only available in some hotels and is discreet according to Wikivoyage (DE, EN); nightlife is very limited.
Getting around
Taxis, minibuses and buses: agree the fare first
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis (orange and white) have no meter: agree the fare before you get in according to Wikivoyage (EN, DE). A ride-hailing app is available and saves haggling. Distances between districts are long because the city is spread out.
Minibuses and buses
Shared minibuses known as baisa buses run along the highways; a ride within the city costs very little according to Wikivoyage (EN). The Mwasalat bus network was renewed in November 2015 according to Wikipedia (EN), with routes to Mutrah, Ruwi and the airport.
Rental car
Many international agencies operate according to Wikivoyage (DE). Roads are paved and well kept, but distances between districts and excursions are easier with a vehicle.
Budget and precautions
Variable prices, local customs to respect
Price level
Wikivoyage (EN) finds food relatively affordable; accommodation is mostly outside Old Muscat, which adds taxi costs. The currency is the Omani rial (OMR). We publish no amounts except the airport taxi range, because sources are dated or disagree.
Entry requirements
Entry rules (visa, length of stay, passport validity) depend on nationality and change over time. Check the official Oman tourism portal and your foreign ministry's advice before booking.
Local customs
Oman is a Muslim country where modest dress is expected: covering shoulders and knees is the prudent rule for women and men alike. Remove your shoes to enter a mosque and ask before photographing people. Wikipedia (ES) notes that non-Muslims may practise their religion but may not proselytise.
Heat and weather
Summers are very hot and humid, up to 45 C according to Wikipedia (EN). Drink water, avoid daytime hikes and look for air-conditioned places. SniperAir tracks flight prices to MCT and compares them with the route's history, but does not sell or book tickets.
When to go
A desert climate: winter and early spring are the most pleasant
Winter (December to February)
Days are mild and this is when most of the rare rain falls according to Wikipedia (EN, ES). The Muscat Festival runs from late January to early February according to Wikivoyage (EN).
Spring (March to May)
Heat builds gradually; walking is still possible in the morning and late afternoon. Rainfall becomes very rare.
Summer (June to August)
Very hot and humid, up to 45 C according to Wikipedia (EN). Cyclones from the Arabian Sea hit the city in June 2007 (Gonu) and June 2010 (Phet) according to Wikipedia (EN).
Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures become bearable again from October-November, a good moment for excursions. Check the forecast before you book.
