Colombo is Sri Lanka's executive and judicial capital and its most populous city, on the island's west coast beside Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, the legislative capital (Wikipedia, EN). The city has roughly 561,000 inhabitants and the metropolitan region more than 5 million according to Wikipedia (FR). Its natural harbour has drawn traders for about two thousand years: Romans, Arabs and Chinese, then the Portuguese, Dutch and British left their mark in turn.

That past gives Colombo a composite face: Buddhist temples, mosques, churches, crowded markets, a seafront and recent high-rises. Many travellers land at the international airport before heading to the centre of the island or the coast. A flight's price varies with the season and departure city: a SniperAir alert lets you spot a good fare to Colombo (CMB) without checking prices every day.

Bandaranaike airport, 30 to 35 km north

CMB

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)

Sri Lanka's main international airport is at Katunayake, 35 km north of the city according to Wikipedia (FR, DE, ES) and about 30 km in Wikivoyage (DE). Wikivoyage (EN) notes it is closer to Negombo than to Colombo, and it is the hub of SriLankan Airlines. Ratmalana Airport (RML), to the south, handles only a few domestic flights and light aircraft per Wikivoyage (EN, DE); routes change, so check before booking.

Approximate distances and times from Wikipedia (FR, DE, ES) and Wikivoyage (DE, EN); routes change. We do not quote transfer fares because sources disagree.

Wikivoyage (EN) allows about 45 minutes by taxi on the tolled E03 expressway to the Fort area. A prepaid taxi counter stands just after customs; ride-hailing apps also work, and buses and a train give a much cheaper but longer trip. Always confirm the price before getting in.

If you arrive late or leave early, Wikivoyage (EN) suggests staying overnight in Negombo, closer to the airport. Many travellers then head for the centre of the island by train from Fort station, the country's main rail hub.

Lotus Tower, Seema Malaka and Independence Memorial Hall

Colombo became the island's capital in 1815 under the British and remained so after independence in 1948, before administration moved to Kotte (Wikipedia, EN). These are the places pictured below.

The Lotus Tower

It is the tallest tower in the city and the country at 350 m, completed in 2019 (Wikipedia, FR). It stands east of Beira Lake and serves telecommunications; Wikivoyage (EN) says it offers great views and that its colours change every few seconds at night. Entry is charged, but we do not publish the fee.

Seema Malaka

This Buddhist complex, built on Beira Lake, adjoins Gangaramaya Temple, one of the most important in the city, whose architecture mixes Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese styles (Wikivoyage, EN). Wikivoyage (DE) describes Gangaramaya as an old temple and also a rather chaotic museum. The views from the lake of the neighbouring buildings are unusual.

Independence Memorial Hall

This national monument in Cinnamon Gardens commemorates the country's independence (Wikivoyage, EN); Wikipedia (DE) says it was built in 1946 on the model of the Washington Capitol. It stands on Independence Square, redeveloped in an urban regeneration programme (Wikipedia, EN).

The Fort, Beira Lake and the city

The Fort is the historic centre, now a business district, with the old parliament and Beira Lake (Wikipedia, DE). From above, the city mixes lake, apartment towers and greenery, with the harbour in the distance. The neighbouring Pettah district is known for its markets and the Khan Clock Tower (Wikipedia, EN).

Also worth seeing: Galle Face Green, a large oceanfront promenade busy at sunset, especially on weekends; Viharamahadevi Park, the oldest and largest in the city; and the Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque in Pettah, built in 1909 (Wikivoyage, EN).

A national museum, specialist museums and temples

Museums

The National Museum of Colombo, founded in 1877 according to Wikipedia (ES), stands in Cinnamon Gardens and holds the jewels and throne of the last king of Kandy. Wikivoyage (EN) also lists a natural history museum, a very small Dutch Period Museum and a National Railway Museum in the former station. We do not quote fees.

Temples and mosques

Buddhism is the dominant religion, but Islam is strongly present in Colombo (Wikipedia, DE). Gangaramaya is the best-known temple; the Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque and the churches reflect the city's diversity.

A multicultural city

Wikipedia (EN) describes a population of Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Moors and Tamils, with small Chinese, Portuguese Burgher and Dutch Burgher communities. That diversity shows in the districts, markets and festivals.

Rotis, hoppers and food from around the world

Street food

Wikivoyage (EN) notes small bakeries selling rotis, filled or folded, hoppers, bowl-shaped pancakes made with coconut milk, and other short eats, bread-based snacks or fried foods. Lunch packets of rice and vegetables are sold from street stands almost everywhere.

Markets

Pettah Market sells everything from fruit to clothes, with plenty of bargaining (Wikivoyage, EN). It is a crowded, busy district whose pavements are full of stalls (Wikipedia, EN).

World cuisines

The city has many international cuisines, including Japanese, British and American according to Wikivoyage (EN), often in the hotels of the Fort and Galle Face.

Tuk-tuks, apps, buses and trains

Tuk-tuks and taxis

Wikivoyage (EN) presents the three-wheeled tuk-tuk as the most convenient way around, but drivers in tourist areas often refuse the meter: agree the price before riding. Taxis are more comfortable, and tourist-board tuk-tuks are metered.

Apps

PickMe, a home-grown service, and Uber are available in the city; Wikivoyage (EN) notes that Uber shows fixed fares in advance.

Buses and trains

The three main bus terminals are in Pettah. Of four commuter train lines, only the Coastal Line is really useful to travellers, in third class only (Wikivoyage, EN).

Mid-range price levels, to be checked

Price level

Colombo is pricier than the rest of the country in tourist districts but remains affordable for a European traveller according to the pages consulted. We give no ranges or fares because we could not cross-check them on two current independent sources: rupee amounts quoted date from different years. The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR).

Flights

Flights are the most variable item. SniperAir monitors prices to CMB and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. Kochi, Chennai or Kuala Lumpur can complete your watch if you combine several stops.

Entry rules and precautions

Entry rules for Sri Lanka depend on your nationality and change: check official sites and your own government's travel advice. Protect yourself from heat and humidity, drink bottled water and agree tuk-tuk fares before setting off.

Hot and humid all year, with monsoons

December to March

According to Wikivoyage (EN), this is the driest and most pleasant period, linked to the north-east monsoon.

March to April

Average highs are around 31 C (Wikipedia, EN; Wikipedia, ES).

Monsoons

Heavy rain falls in two monsoon seasons; sources disagree on the exact months, so we do not publish them. Wikivoyage (EN) also mentions a shorter drier period in July and August.

All year

Humidity stays above 70 percent all year according to Wikipedia (FR): pack light clothing.

The climate is equatorial, hot and humid all year (Wikipedia, FR). Wikivoyage (EN) gives temperatures generally from 25 to 30 C. Check the forecast before you go.
