Cliffs and turquoise sea
Holidays in Krabi, southern Thailand's most dramatic coast
On the Andaman Sea in southern Thailand, Krabi province is known for limestone karst towers that rise from jungle and sea alike, forming rock islands offshore. A holiday here means beaches such as Railay and Ao Nang, rock climbing, kayaking and boat trips to the Phi Phi and Hong islands. The province covers about 4,700 square kilometres and has four national parks (Wikipedia).
The destination has two faces: the Ao Nang and Railay tourist hub, and Krabi Town, the river port and provincial seat, which lives at its own pace away from the beach resorts.
Railay
A peninsula reached only by boat
High limestone cliffs cut Railay off from the mainland, so there is no road: long-tail boats run from Ao Nang in roughly 10 to 15 minutes, or from Krabi Town in about 45. Guides warn that the peninsula's monkeys are keen on stealing snacks.
| Beach | Good to know |
|---|---|
| West Railay | The main beach, calm all year, with a promenade of restaurants and sunset bars |
| East Railay | The boat dock side, mostly mangroves and not for swimming, with cheaper stays |
| Phra Nang | Reached by a trail from East Railay or on the Four Islands Tour; go early, before tour boats fill the bay |

Climbing and nature
Railay's cliffs, a world climbing destination
The limestone towers of Railay and Ton Sai draw rock climbers from around the world, with hundreds of documented routes and beginner courses as well as routes for experienced climbers.
Kayaking and hiking
The coast is also explored by kayak or paddleboard, and a trail leads up to a viewpoint over Railay.
National parks
Besides the marine park of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi, the province has the inland parks of Khao Phanom Bencha and Than Bok Khorani, and Ko Lanta's park.
By boat
Phi Phi, Hong and the Four Islands Tour
Boats leave from Ao Nang, the base for the province's excursions. The Four Islands Tour by longtail visits Phra Nang Cave beach, Ko Tup, Chicken Island and Ko Poda, while the Hong Islands tour is known for its inner lagoon and for kayaking.
Distances by sea
According to Wikivoyage, Ko Phi Phi is roughly 40 to 50 minutes from Ao Nang by speedboat, and a good deal longer by longtail. In the wet season regular services are reduced and some trips can be cancelled when the sea is rough.
Krabi Town
A river port and its night markets
The provincial capital sits on the Krabi River rather than the open sea, which makes stays cheaper. A food market sets up by the pier in the evening, and a walking-street market runs from Friday to Sunday, according to Wikivoyage; the Maharaj fresh market is best visited in the morning. The area was long based on fishing, rubber and palm oil before tourism took over.
Evenings in Ao Nang
Ao Nang has its own night market and the province's busiest seaside bars and restaurants.
Museums and sights
Tiger Cave Temple, caves and the shell cemetery
Krabi is above all a nature destination, but there are a few places worth a stop. None ranks among Thailand's major museums, so check opening hours before you set off.
Wat Tham Suea
The Tiger Cave Temple, a few kilometres north of Krabi Town, is reached by a staircase of more than 1,200 steps leading to a 360-degree view over the area.
Small museums in Krabi Town
Wikivoyage lists a contemporary art museum in town and a cultural centre devoted to the Andaman coast; opening arrangements change, so confirm on the spot.
Caves and fossils
Moh Khieo Cave yielded the oldest adult Homo sapiens skeleton found in Thailand, about 25,000 years old (French Wikipedia). The Susan Hoi shell cemetery and the Khao Kanab Nam caves, reached by boat from the town pier, complete the picture.
Eating in Krabi
Southern curries, fresh crab and market stalls
Krabi Town is the best place for an authentic meal: night-market stalls serve a wide range of southern dishes at reasonable prices, while Ao Nang is noticeably more expensive. Chinese-Thai cooking, Muslim-influenced curries and fresh crab are the local strengths.
| Dish | What it is |
|---|---|
| Kaeng tai pla | A fiery curry of fermented fish |
| Khua kling | Dry, spicy minced meat |
| Gaeng som | A sour orange curry |
| Night markets | Skewers, grilled fish, fruit and cooked dishes for a few tens of baht |
Where to stay
Ao Nang, Railay or Krabi Town
| Area | What suits you |
|---|---|
| Ao Nang | The most convenient base for boats, restaurants and excursions, though busy in high season |
| Railay | Beaches and cliffs on your doorstep, reached only by boat |
| Krabi Town | Cheaper stays, river life and the night markets |
Getting to Krabi
Krabi airport and the boats
Krabi International
Served from Bangkok, with a few regional and international flights. It lies about 15 km east of Krabi Town centre and roughly 40 km from Ao Nang (Wikivoyage).
Allow from about 40 minutes to an hour to reach Ao Nang from the airport, depending on whether you take a taxi, a shuttle bus or a songthaew with a change; sources differ and traffic varies. Railay can only be reached by longtail boat from Ao Nang or Krabi Town.
Getting around
Songthaews, scooters and boats
Between Krabi Town and Ao Nang, about 15 km apart, the white songthaew (shared pickup taxi) costs around 60 baht by day and a little more in the evening, according to two Wikivoyage pages; it runs later in high season than in low season.
Central Krabi Town is easy on foot. In Ao Nang people use songthaews, tuk-tuks (fares are negotiated) or rented scooters, roughly 150 to 250 baht a day according to Wikivoyage; check your licence and insurance first. Railay and the islands are reached by boat.
When to go
Krabi's climate by season
November to February
High season: calmer sea and drier days. January is the driest month, with about 32 mm of rain in Krabi Town, and November-December are slightly cooler.
March to May
The hottest months: in March the average daily highs reach about 34 C. The first monsoon rains arrive.
June to September
Green season: frequent showers, a rougher sea, lower prices and some cancelled crossings.
October
The wettest month, with about 320 mm on average, for around 2,000 mm a year (Wikipedia).
The climate is tropical monsoon. High season runs from about November to April, and the low or "green" season, as tourism officials call it, from May to October. The best time for the sea and the islands is therefore December to March.
Budget
An inexpensive to mid-range price level
Southern Thailand remains affordable: market and small-restaurant meals cost a few tens of baht, restaurant mains around a hundred baht, and seafood from about 250 baht according to Wikivoyage (older listings, to be checked). Ao Nang costs two to three times as much as Krabi Town for a meal. For beds, budget rooms are found below 500 baht a night according to Wikivoyage, but prices climb steeply in high season, especially at Railay.
Add boat excursions, whose price depends on the route and type of boat. We do not publish a price list: compare several offers locally.
