Tivat is a small coastal town whose airport serves the whole Bay of Kotor: Kotor is about ten kilometres away and Budva about twenty. Because traffic is strongly seasonal, fares can swing a lot from one period to another, and an alert saves you from checking every day and missing a good price.

TIV

Tivat (TIV)

Tivat Airport lies roughly 3 to 4 km south of the centre depending on the source, on the edge of the bay between sea and mountains. According to Wikivoyage, there is no direct public transport from the airport, so a taxi is the simplest option. Regular buses on the nearby road serve Tivat bus station and, from there, Kotor. About 80 per cent of passengers travel between May and September, according to Wikipedia (DE, ES).

Distances and times are approximate, based on Wikipedia (DE, ES, EN) and Wikivoyage (EN); bus timetables change. We do not quote fares.

From Tivat, Kotor is about 10 km away, Herceg Novi 19 km, Budva 23 km, Dubrovnik 80 km and Podgorica 90 km, according to Wikipedia (EN, DE). The road to Podgorica takes around 1 h 45 by taxi according to Wikivoyage. Dubrovnik involves crossing the Croatian border, so allow extra time in summer.

A bay of mountains, palm trees and yachts

Tivat is the youngest town on the Bay of Kotor, grown at the foot of the Vrmac, and its look owes much to the arsenal built under Austria, now turned into a marina. The Kotor region has been on the UNESCO list since 1979. The places below have photos; the Buća Luković residence, the park, Flower Island and the salt pans are covered in text.

Porto Montenegro and the waterfront

On the former shipyard, the Porto Montenegro marina lines up warm-toned buildings, palm trees and a waterside promenade in front of the mountains. The old Yugoslav naval arsenal was turned into a luxury marina by Canadian businessman Peter Munk.

The marina and its boats

Sailing boats and yachts moor under the palm trees of the marina with wooded mountains behind. The promenade is open to everyone and is a pleasant place for an evening stroll.

The bay and its beaches

Around Tivat, pebble beaches and small wooden jetties line the bay. Seljanovo, Opatovo, the town beach by the promenade and the sandy Plavi Horizonti are among the best known, according to the tourist board.

The Pine promenade

The Pine promenade in the middle of Tivat runs on without a break into the Porto Montenegro waterfront. Locals walk here, take a coffee and, according to the tourist board, treat themselves to crempita, a cream cake. The training ship Jadran comes into view.

Places to find, in text

The Buća Luković summer residence is a fortified tower 15 m high built in 1548 according to the tourist board and Wikipedia (DE), now an art gallery, with an open-air theatre. The large town park, laid out in 1892 under Austria-Hungary, holds exotic trees brought back by sailors. Flower Island, or Miholjska Prevlaka, has carried a monastery of Archangel Michael since the 6th century. The Solila salt pans are a Ramsar wetland since 2013, with 178 bird species recorded, and entry is free. Gornja Lastva, a medieval village around 300 m above sea level, overlooks the bay.

Small venues rather than big museums

The Buća Luković tower

The tower houses the town museum and an art gallery; the neighbouring open-air theatre hosts concerts, films and plays in summer.

Monasteries and islands

On Gospa od Milosti island, Celestine monks settled in 1479 and Franciscans took over in 1524; the monastery holds one of the richest libraries in the bay. On Flower Island, the monastery of Archangel Michael was the seat of the bishopric of Zeta in the 13th century.

The training ship Jadran

Built in Hamburg and welcomed in Tivat in 1933, Jadran is the town's maritime emblem. It holds open days in summer. We do not quote prices.

Bayside terraces and marina dining

What to eat

Documentation is thin; you mainly find pizzerias, fish restaurants and Mediterranean cooking, especially in the marina. On the Pine promenade, the tourist board mentions the cream cake called crempita.

Markets and drinks

We could not cross-check a specific market or local drink for Tivat on two sources; ask on the spot.

A high price level

According to Wikivoyage, everything tends to be expensive in Tivat given the clientele. Marina restaurants are the priciest; away from the waterfront you find simpler tables.

A walkable centre, a few buses and boats

On foot

Tivat's centre is small enough to cover on foot. The promenade follows the waterfront all the way to Porto Montenegro.

Local buses and Kotor

A few unnumbered local lines leave from Palih Boraca street. The Kotor-Tivat bus runs about hourly, often late in high season because of traffic around the Vrmac range, according to Wikivoyage.

Boats and taxis

Boat tours leave the main port for Kotor and Herceg Novi. A taxi is the simplest way to the airport; agree the price before you set off.

A high budget compared with the interior

Price level

Tivat is a rather expensive destination, especially in the marina. The currency is the euro. We do not quote amounts because we could not cross-check up-to-date figures from two independent sources.

By air

The flight is the most variable item. SniperAir monitors prices to TIV and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. Dubrovnik (DBV) or Podgorica (TGD) can be watched alongside.

Entry and safety

Montenegro is not a member of the European Union: entry conditions depend on your nationality, so check official sources and your own government's advice. Keep an eye on your belongings in busy places.

A peak season from May to September

Winter (December to February)

Quiet season: fewer services and few flights, but the bay is still beautiful.

Spring (March to May)

Terraces reopen as the season builds. A good time for the promenade and boat trips.

Summer (June to August)

Full season: around 80 per cent of air traffic passes between May and September. Beaches, boat trips and heavy traffic around the bay.

Autumn (September to November)

End of season: fewer people from October, with lovely light over the bay.

We give no temperatures because none could be cross-checked in the sources consulted; look at the forecast before you go. The tourist season is concentrated between May and September, judging by airport traffic (Wikipedia DE, ES).
