Dal Lake
A city between two hills and a lake
Srinagar stretches along the Jhelum River, between the Hari Parbat and Shankaracharya hills, beside Dal Lake, at roughly 1,600 m in the Kashmir Valley. It had about 1.18 million residents at the 2011 census (Wikipedia). It is a place of exceptional beauty: a carved cedar houseboat for the night, a shikara gliding across the water at sunrise, terraced Mughal gardens, Asia's largest tulip garden and a feast of up to 36 courses.
Founded in the 6th century, the city flourished under Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin, who developed its shawl, carpet, papier-mache and woodcarving crafts. The Mughals later turned it into a place of leisure.
A living lake
Dal Lake covers about 18 to 21 km2 depending on the source, smaller than it once was. Its floating gardens, the raad, bloom with lotus in July and August, and the small island of Char Chinar has four chinar trees.
Houseboats and shikaras
Sleeping on the water, and gliding across it
A night on a Dal Lake houseboat is the signature Srinagar experience. The tradition dates back to British times: since foreigners were not allowed to own land, the British built boats instead. Houseboats are graded in categories, from simple boats to deluxe ones, and some booking platforms inflate the category. Check the plate of the houseboat owners' association before you book. Rates go up in July.
By shikara
Shikara rides usually run from 6 am to 6 pm, and the government sets an official hourly rate. Touts often ask much more, so check the official rate and agree the price before you get in. Get up early for the floating vegetable market, held at dawn from April to October.
Mughal gardens
Terraced gardens and Asia's largest tulip garden
| Garden | What to know |
|---|---|
| Shalimar Bagh | Created in 1619 under Jahangir, three terraces over about 12 ha. |
| Nishat Bagh | Created in 1633 by Asif Khan, twelve terraces over about 19 ha. |
| Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal | The other two great Mughal gardens of the city. |
| Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden | Opened in 2007, about 30 ha with some 1.75 million bulbs of 70 to 75 varieties, blooming from March to April. |
The gardens generally open from 9 am to 7 pm, depending on the season.

Monuments
Hazratbal, the Jama Masjid and the Shankaracharya temple
Hazratbal Shrine
On the shore of Dal Lake, the white marble Hazratbal Shrine houses the relic known as Moi-e-Muqqadas, displayed on special occasions.

The Jama Masjid
In the old city, the Jama Masjid was begun in 1394 by Sultan Sikandar and completed in 1402. Its courtyard of 114 m by 113 m is surrounded by hundreds of wooden pillars, and it has been rebuilt several times after fires.
Shankaracharya and Dachigam
Above the city, the Shankaracharya temple crowns its hill. About 22 km away, Dachigam National Park offers a nature outing.
The old town
Khanqah-e-Moula, built in 1397, the Pathar Masjid (1623) and the Roza Bal shrine complete a walk through the old wooden-fronted districts (Wikipedia).
Museums
One main museum, and a lot of open-air heritage
Srinagar is not a city of grand museums. The main one is the Shri Pratap Singh (SPS) Museum, open Tuesday to Sunday according to Wikivoyage EN, which holds tens of thousands of art and archaeology objects from Kashmir. The other cultural sights are living ones: gardens, wooden mosques, and workshops for papier-mache, carpets and shawls.
Worth knowing
Hours and entry fees change: check on the spot or with the Jammu and Kashmir tourism office before you go.
Kashmiri cuisine and crafts
Wazwan, noon chai, saffron and pashmina
Wazwan
Wazwan is the great Kashmiri feast, up to 36 courses prepared by a waza and shared from a copper plate, the traem, in groups of four. Look out for rogan josh, rista and tabakh maaz; gushtaba marks the end of the meal.
Tea and saffron
Between meals, drink noon chai, a salted pink tea, or kahwa, a green tea with cardamom, and bring back some Kashmiri saffron.
Crafts
Shawls, carpets, papier-mache and carved wood are the local crafts. Wikivoyage EN warns that many shawls sold as pashmina are blends, so learn the difference before you buy.

Getting around
Taxis, auto-rickshaws and shikaras
In Srinagar you get around mostly by taxi or auto-rickshaw, whose fare you should negotiate before getting in (Wikivoyage EN), and by shikara on the lake. From the airport, a paid government bus runs to the tourist reception centre near Lal Chowk (Wikipedia), and taxis wait outside the terminal.

Before you go
Check official travel advice
Srinagar lies in the Kashmir Valley, a region for which many countries' travel advice is regularly updated and sometimes very restrictive. Wikivoyage EN reports a heavy security presence and notes that temporary curfews, roadblocks and mobile internet restrictions can happen with little warning. Read your foreign ministry's advice before booking, check that your insurance covers the area and consider using registered local operators.
Day to day
Avoid the Jama Masjid area after Friday prayers (Wikivoyage EN), carry some cash and expect persistent touts around Dal Lake.
Budget
A moderate budget, very variable by lodging
Srinagar remains an affordable destination for most international travellers, but prices vary a lot: a houseboat can be very simple or very luxurious, and rates rise in high season, in July especially. Off season they can often be bargained down (Wikivoyage EN). Local meals, auto-rickshaw rides and garden or museum entry fees stay modest, but we do not publish figures that have not been cross-checked; prices are in Indian rupees.
Saving money
Compare several houseboats, agree the shikara price before boarding, visit outside July and group excursions into one day.
