City of Lakes
Things to do in Udaipur, India's romance capital
Udaipur, in southern Rajasthan at the foot of the Aravalli hills, is known as the City of Lakes and the Venice of the East. Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II as the capital of the Kingdom of Mewar, it was called the most romantic spot on the continent of India by the British administrator James Tod. Most things to do in Udaipur revolve around the water, the palaces and the heritage of the Sisodia Rajputs: white marble palaces mirrored in Lake Pichola, rooftop dinners facing the lake and palace hotels that make it a favorite of honeymooners.
A James Bond setting
The film Octopussy, released in 1983, was shot in the region, notably at the City Palace, the Lake Palace, Jag Mandir and the Monsoon Palace. The city also lives from marble, zinc and crafts, but it is tourism, from honeymoons to cultural stays, that makes its reputation.
The city at a glance
About 450,000 inhabitants at the 2011 census, at an altitude of around 570 m. Seven lakes surround the city, five of them main ones and interconnected.
The lakes
Five lakes linked together
| Lake | Good to know |
|---|---|
| Pichola | The lake of the palaces: the City Palace on its shore, the Lake Palace and Jag Mandir on its islands. A boat ride at sunset is a classic; boats leave from near the south gate of the City Palace. |
| Fateh Sagar | A 17th-century artificial lake lined by Moti Magri hill, with Nehru Garden on an island |
| Swaroop Sagar, Rang Sagar, Doodh Talai | The other three lakes of the network, linked to Pichola; Doodh Talai is a sunset viewpoint |
During the monsoon, from July to September, the lakes fill and the landscape turns green; in the dry season some lakes drop noticeably.
City Palace
The largest palace in Rajasthan
A palace of granite and marble
Its facade runs 244 m along the lake and rises about 30 m above Lake Pichola. The City Palace brings together eleven palaces linked by courtyards, the palace of the Sisodia dynasty, 22 generations of which are counted. Part of it became a museum in 1974. Not to be missed: the Sheesh Mahal, the palace of mirrors built in 1716, the Mor Chowk, the peacock courtyard made of thousands of pieces of glass, the Manak Mahal and the Zenana Mahal, the women's quarters.
The Crystal Gallery
Ordered from London in 1877 by Sajjan Singh, the crystal furniture of the gallery was left in its crates for 110 years before being displayed. It is in the Fateh Prakash Palace, now a luxury hotel: Wikivoyage EN says access is limited, so check visiting conditions on site.

On the water
The Lake Palace and Jag Mandir, the island palaces
The Lake Palace (Jag Niwas)
Some 16,000 m² of white marble set in the middle of Lake Pichola, rebuilt in the 18th century. Turned into a five-star hotel in 1971, the palace has hosted Vivien Leigh, Queen Elizabeth and Jacqueline Kennedy; it is reserved for guests and diners.
Jag Mandir
The other island on Pichola, with its palace of 1620, reached by boat from the City Palace.
Around the old town
Temples, gardens and sunset
| Place | Why go |
|---|---|
| Jagdish Temple | A temple to Vishnu built in 1651, about 150 m north of the palace, free to enter; rituals and chanting from dawn until night |
| Monsoon Palace (Sajjangarh) | A hilltop palace begun in 1884, for sunset views over the lakes; you need a taxi or tuk-tuk |
| Saheliyon-ki-Bari | The Garden of the Maids, with fountains, a lotus pool and marble elephants |
| Gulab Bagh | A rose garden near Lake Pichola, with a library of old manuscripts |
| Ahar Cenotaphs | More than 250 cenotaphs of the maharanas of Mewar, about 2 km east of the city |
| Shilpgram | A craft village of western India, about 3 km west of Lake Fateh Sagar |
The lanes of the old town around the City Palace are narrow. Cooking classes and miniature painting workshops are popular ways to spend an afternoon.
Museums
The City Palace, a haveli and folk art
| Museum | Good to know |
|---|---|
| City Palace Museum | Inside the palace complex: royal rooms, weapons, portraits, mirror work and murals; open since 1974 |
| Bagore ki Haveli | The former mansion of Mewar's Prime Minister, on the Lake Pichola waterfront at Gangori Ghat, now a museum with over a hundred rooms (costumes, Mewar paintings, glasswork); an evening show of dance and puppetry |
| Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal | A museum of Rajasthani folk art: costumes, tribal jewelry, turbans, masks, musical instruments and puppets, with performances |
| Small museum at Saheliyon-ki-Bari | A small museum in the Garden of the Maids |
Hours and prices change with the season: check the official information before you go. The City Palace is open from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm according to Wikivoyage EN (to be confirmed).
Mewar flavors
What to eat in Udaipur
Order dal baati churma, the Rajasthani classic, along with gatte ki sabzi (gram-flour dumplings in curry) and laal maas, a very spicy lamb dish. Pyaaz kachori and mirchi bada make good snacks, and ghevar and imarti are the sweets to finish with. Thali restaurants offer unlimited servings of Rajasthani and Gujarati dishes, and many rooftop restaurants overlook Lake Pichola, though you often have to climb several flights of stairs to reach them. Dining on the terrace of a lakeside haveli hotel is part of the experience.
Drinks
Cafes and terraces, such as the one at the Fateh Prakash hotel on the lake, are good places for a drink at sunset. Outside the old town, street stalls sell chaat, a popular snack; choose busy places and follow the usual food-hygiene advice.
Day trips
Forts and temples around Udaipur
| Destination | From Udaipur |
|---|---|
| Eklingji | About 24 km |
| Haldighati | About 44 km |
| Kumbhalgarh | 85 to 90 km, 2 to 2.5 h |
| Ranakpur | About 96 km; about 3 hours by bus |
| Chittorgarh | About 115 to 120 km, 3 hours by road; about 2 hours by train |
Kumbhalgarh is a 15th-century fort with a wall 36 km long, and Ranakpur is known for its carved Jain temple. The two are usually combined into a single day of 6 to 8 hours. Chittorgarh, the former capital of Mewar, and Nathdwara are other classic excursions.
Getting around
Tuk-tuks, taxis and trains
Most of the old town can be covered on foot, and the narrow lanes around the City Palace discourage vehicles. To reach the Monsoon Palace, the wildlife park or outlying districts, taxis and tuk-tuks (auto-rickshaws) are available: agree the fare before the ride or use a ride-hailing app such as Uber or Ola, which avoids haggling (Wikivoyage EN).
From the airport
There are no public buses between the airport and the city: take a prepaid taxi from the airport counter, a ride-hailing car or your hotel's transfer.
Trains and buses
The city has two railway stations and a bus station. Direct trains link Udaipur with Chittorgarh, Ajmer, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Mumbai, and buses go to Mount Abu, Jodhpur, Ranakpur and other Rajasthan cities. Book trains ahead: seats sell out quickly.
Budget
A wide range, from backpacking to palace hotels
Udaipur offers the full range: budget guesthouses in the old town, mid-range hotels and palace hotels on the lake. It is popular with couples and honeymooners, which pushes up prices at the top end, especially in the high season from October to March. Local transport, simple meals and temple or garden entry fees remain affordable; the City Palace and its museums, evening shows and boat rides are paid and their prices vary from source to source: check them on the spot. Allow some margin for day trips by taxi.
