Karachi is Pakistan's largest city and its commercial and financial hub, on the Arabian Sea coast north-west of the Indus delta (Wikipedia, EN; Wikivoyage, EN). It is the capital of Sindh province and was the country's first capital after independence in 1947. Wikivoyage calls it the City of Lights and the City of the Quaid, because Muhammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan, was born and is buried here. The same guide describes the most cosmopolitan city in the country, a mini-Pakistan where every community meets. Quoted populations range from 15 million to nearly 19 million depending on the source and the boundaries: we do not publish a figure.

Important: official travel advice varies by departure country, and may advise against certain regions or journeys; it changes quickly. Before planning, read the official information from your own country on entry rules, health, insurance and the situation on the ground. SniperAir monitors flight prices to Karachi (KHI) and alerts you; it does not sell or book tickets, and does not replace that advice.

Jinnah airport, Pakistan's busiest gateway on the Arabian Sea

KHI

Jinnah International Airport (KHI)

Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (EN) describe it as the busiest airport in Pakistan, with a terminal that has an international and a domestic concourse, and the hub of the national carrier. Services change with the seasons: check them before booking, and allow some margin, as immigration queues can be long at peak hours.

Wikipedia (EN) says the Shahrah-e-Faisal road links the Saddar district with the airport. We publish no journey time or taxi fare: sources do not agree and the amounts quoted date from different years.

To reach town, taxis and cars with a driver are the simplest options; Wikivoyage (EN) advises agreeing the price before getting in, as vehicles often have no meter. Congestion is heavy at peak hours (08:00 to 10:00 and 17:30 to 19:00 according to Wikivoyage) so avoid arriving or leaving at those times if you can.

To enter Pakistan, visa rules depend on your nationality: check with the Pakistani authorities and your own country's official information before booking anything.

Jinnah's mausoleum, Frere Hall, Mohatta Palace and the seafront

Karachi does not have the charm of a single old town: its landmarks are spread out between the colonial districts of Saddar and the coastal neighbourhoods. According to Wikivoyage (EN), the British built many buildings here between 1858 and 1947, and many remain. These are the places pictured below.

The Mazar-e-Quaid mausoleum

Jinnah's mausoleum, built entirely of white marble and completed in the 1960s (Wikivoyage, EN), is one of the city's symbols. Its dome and great arches stand above a vast plaza. It is a place of national remembrance: modest dress and discretion are expected, and access rules can change.

Frere Hall

Wikivoyage (EN) dates this building to 1865 and describes a Venetian Gothic style in yellow Karachi limestone with red and grey sandstone, set amid broad lawns. It is among the best-preserved colonial buildings in the city and suits a quiet walk in the Civil Lines area.

Mohatta Palace

Completed in 1928 in pink Jodhpur sandstone and local yellow stone, the palace recalls Rajasthani mansions with its domes and turrets (Wikivoyage, EN). It now houses a museum, in the Clifton district. Check the opening days and hours before going.

Clifton Beach

Clifton Beach is the busiest beach in the city, with grey sand, enjoyed more for its late-afternoon atmosphere than for swimming: Wikivoyage (EN) warns of strong currents, especially from June to August. Wikivoyage (DE) adds that those who do bathe do so fully clothed.

Also worth seeing: Empress Market, a large colonial market with a clock tower in Saddar, the Holy Trinity and St Patrick's cathedrals, and the Masjid e Tooba mosque, with a single dome 72 m across (Wikivoyage, EN).

Museums in Karachi: history, money, aviation and science

National Museum of Pakistan

Wikivoyage (EN) presents it as a museum with archaeology, ancient coins and sculpture, including a gallery on the independence movement. Opening hours and closing days change: check before going. We give no ticket prices.

Wazir Mansion and Jinnah's house

Jinnah's birthplace, Wazir Mansion, is a protected national monument (Wikivoyage, EN). Quaid-e-Azam House, where he lived from 1944 to 1948, can also be visited: both places tell the story of the country's birth.

Specialist museums

The State Bank Museum covers money and economic history; the MagnifiScience Centre, opened in 2021, offers interactive science exhibits; air force and maritime museums complete the picture (Wikivoyage, EN).

Religious and built heritage

Karachi has mosques, cathedrals, a large Hindu temple and a historic Jewish cemetery, signs of its diversity (Wikivoyage, EN).

Nihari, biryani and food streets open late into the night

Karachi cooking

Wikivoyage (EN) links the city's cuisine to the influence of the Muhajir community, who came from India after 1947. Expect slow-cooked or grilled meat dishes, biryani and fresh breads; paratha rolls are a street classic.

Where to eat

Burns Road in Saddar is the historic food street, known for nihari, sajji, bottis and tikkas. Boat Basin lines up open-air restaurants open very late, and Do Darya offers tables facing the Arabian Sea (Wikivoyage, EN). Choose busy places where you can see customers.

Drinks and precautions

Milk tea and freshly pressed fruit juices accompany meals. Prefer bottled water and avoid ice of uncertain origin. We name no brands or precise addresses.

Rickshaws, meterless taxis and rapid buses

Taxis and rickshaws

According to Wikivoyage (EN), rickshaws and taxis often have no meter: agree the fare before getting in, and do not hesitate to walk away if the quote seems too high. Ride-hailing apps can help, though Wikivoyage (DE) notes they work unevenly from one district to another.

Buses and train

Colourful minibuses are very cheap but crowded and hard for a visitor to read. Wikivoyage (DE) mentions a Metrobus with a dedicated lane since December 2021, and the Karachi Circular Railway reopened in late 2020 with a limited service (Wikivoyage, EN). Check line status before relying on them.

Traffic and walking

Traffic is dense, especially from 08:00 to 10:00 and 17:30 to 19:00. Distances are long and the city is not pedestrian-friendly, apart from dense districts such as Saddar. Wikivoyage (EN) advises against driving yourself if you are not used to South Asian roads.

A moderate price level, unstable figures

Price level

Wikivoyage (EN) ranks Karachi among the cheaper large cities for food and local transport; hotels range from basic to high-end. We publish no ranges or tariffs: the rupee amounts quoted by sources date from different years.

Flights

The flight is the most variable item. SniperAir monitors prices to KHI and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. Connections through a Gulf hub are common: create several alerts to compare.

Entry rules, health and safety

Before any trip, read the official information from your departure country: travel advice varies from one country to another and may advise against certain regions or journeys. Wikivoyage (EN) describes a very large city with very different districts, and recommends carrying some cash, staying alert and checking with your consulate.

Mild winters from November to March, hot humid summers, monsoon in July and August

November to March

The most pleasant period: winter is mild and dry, with clear days. It is the best season for walking in town and enjoying the coast (Wikivoyage, EN).

April to June

Heat builds; Wikivoyage (EN) mentions temperatures of 30 to 44 degrees C from April to October, softened by sea breezes.

July and August

Monsoon rain stays modest but humidity is high; Wikipedia (DE) notes July as the wettest month.

September and October

Summer lingers, hot and humid, before winter returns.

The climate is arid and coastal, with high humidity almost all year (Wikivoyage, EN). Check the forecast before you travel.
