Lahore is Pakistan's second-largest city after Karachi and the capital of Punjab province (Wikivoyage, EN; Wikipedia, FR). Wikivoyage (EN) presents it as the country's cultural capital, with a dense, lively historic core, the Walled City. It preserves Mughal, Sikh and British monuments: Lahore Fort and the Shalimar Gardens are UNESCO World Heritage sites (Wikipedia, EN, ES). Sources quote very different populations depending on census and boundaries, so we publish no figure.

Important: official travel advice varies depending on the country you depart from, may advise against certain regions or movements, and changes quickly. Before planning, read your own government's official information on formalities, health, insurance and the situation on the ground. SniperAir monitors prices for flights to Lahore (LHE) and alerts you; it does not sell or book tickets, and does not replace that advice.

Allama Iqbal Airport, about half an hour from the centre

LHE

Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE)

Wikivoyage (EN) puts the road journey from Allama Iqbal Airport to the centre at 20 to 30 minutes and describes it as a major hub by Pakistani standards, though not by international ones. Connections run via Gulf hubs and Bangkok, according to the same source. Routes change with the seasons, so check before you book.

Approximate duration from Wikivoyage (EN); it depends on traffic. We publish no taxi fares: the amounts quoted by the sources date from different years.

To reach the centre, taxis and shuttles are available; with unmetered taxis, Wikivoyage (EN) advises agreeing the price before getting in. A metro line is planned to serve the airport, though we cannot vouch for its progress.

Lahore is linked by train and bus to other cities in the country. For entry into Pakistan, visa conditions depend on nationality: check with the Pakistani authorities and your own government's official information before booking anything.

Badshahi, Wazir Khan, the fort and Minar-e-Pakistan

Lahore was an important Mughal capital: Akbar lived there from 1584 to 1598 and built the fort on the foundations of an earlier one, according to Wikivoyage (EN). Here are the places pictured below.

Badshahi Mosque

The Badshahi (Royal) Mosque, one of the city's best-known landmarks, was given to Lahore by Aurangzeb (Wikivoyage, EN; Wikipedia, ES). Its red sandstone walls, white domes and minarets are best seen from the huge courtyard. As in any place of worship, covered clothing is expected and access can be limited during prayers, so ask before you come.

From the neighbouring heights, especially at sunset, the mosque sits in a landscape of roofs, walls and coloured sky. Photographers come at the golden hour, and evening lights pick out the minarets; respect the site's photography rules.

Wazir Khan Mosque

Wikivoyage (EN) singles it out in the Walled City for the fineness of its glazed tiles and frescoes. Its great arched gateway, entirely covered in floral patterns, is one of Lahore's emblematic images. Here too, respectful dress is expected.

The Wazir Khan entrance and minarets

The mosque's entrance, decorated with coloured tilework and flanked by domed minarets, opens onto the old city whose narrow lanes and bazaars Wikivoyage (EN) describes as one of its attractions. Walking this quarter takes patience and good shoes; Sunday mornings are quieter.

The fort and Minar-e-Pakistan

From the fort's ramparts, a park and a tall slender tower stand out on the horizon: this is Minar-e-Pakistan, associated with the 1940 Lahore Resolution (Wikivoyage, EN). The fort itself is UNESCO-listed (Wikipedia, EN, ES). Access rules and open areas vary, so check before you go.

Also worth seeing: Gurdwara Dera Sahib, an important Sikh site, the Samadhi of Ranjit Singh near the fort, the Shalimar Gardens, and The Mall, lined with British-era buildings (Wikivoyage, EN).

Lahore Museum, the old city and a literary capital

Lahore Museum

Wikivoyage (EN) lists the Lahore Museum, on The Mall, among the colonial-era institutions, along with the General Post Office. Opening hours and closing days change, so check before you go. We give no prices.

Mughal, Sikh and British heritage

The fort and its palaces, mausoleums, mosques and gurdwaras tell the story of several eras (Wikivoyage, EN). The Shahi Hammam, a restored former bathhouse near Delhi Gate, is part of the old city.

City of letters

Wikipedia (EN) notes that Lahore is a UNESCO City of Literature and a major centre of Pakistani publishing. Wikivoyage (EN) describes it as a city of poets and artists, with many educational institutions.

Punjabi cooking, slow-cooked meats and lassi

Old-city dishes

Lahore's cooking is famed across the country: slow-cooked or grilled meats, fresh breads, hearty breakfast dishes. The old-city quarters hold many restaurants and stalls; choose busy places where you can see customers.

Drinks

Milk tea and lassi, a yoghurt drink, accompany meals. Fresh-pressed juices are sold in the street, but prefer bottled water and avoid ice of uncertain origin.

Modern districts

Wikivoyage (EN) mentions Gulberg and Defence, two districts with more modern shopping centres, cafes and restaurants, in contrast with the old city. We name no brands and no addresses.

Metro, rapid buses and rickshaws in the old city

Metro

Wikivoyage (EN) says Lahore's metro, the country's first, is mostly elevated; only the Orange Line is operating according to that source, with other lines proposed. Wikivoyage (DE) adds that a bus rapid transit system, the Metrobus, has run since 2013 on Ferozepur Road.

Rickshaws and taxis

In the old city, walking or a motorised rickshaw are the only options according to Wikivoyage (EN). Unmetered taxis require you to agree the fare before setting off. For longer trips, ride-hailing apps can make things easier.

On foot

The old city is best seen on foot in good shoes. Outside winter it is too hot to walk long distances by day; Sunday mornings are quieter (Wikivoyage, EN).

A moderate price level, with unstable figures

Price level

Lahore is inexpensive for food and local transport; hotels range from basic to top-end (Wikivoyage, FR, EN). We publish no ranges or fares: the rupee amounts quoted by the sources date from different years.

Flights

The flight is the most variable item. SniperAir monitors prices to LHE and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. A connection via Doha, Dubai or Bangkok is common: set up several alerts.

Formalities, health and safety

Before any trip, read the official information from your country of departure: travel advice varies from one country to another and may advise against some regions or movements. Wikivoyage (EN) describes a congested, polluted city, and thunderstorms with flash floods during the monsoon.

Pleasant winter, extreme heat in June, monsoon from July to September

November to February

The most pleasant time for walking in the city; January is the coolest month, with highs around 18 degrees C and often dense fog (Wikivoyage, EN), which can disrupt flights.

March to May

Heat builds quickly; days become very hot before summer.

June

The hottest month: temperatures routinely exceed 45 degrees C (Wikivoyage, EN).

July to September

The monsoon starts in late June and brings heavy rain, evening thunderstorms and a risk of flash floods (Wikivoyage, EN).

The climate is hot semi-arid (Wikivoyage, EN). Wikivoyage stresses the importance of choosing your season to get the most out of the city. Check the forecast before you leave.
