An airport about 30 km south, at Cam Ranh

CXR

Cam Ranh (CXR)

Cam Ranh International Airport is about 30 km south of Nha Trang, according to Wikivoyage (EN, ES, FR). It opened as a commercial airport in 2004 on the grounds of a former American military airbase, replacing Nha Trang Airport, and is among Vietnam's four busiest airports (Wikivoyage EN). Domestic flights link it with Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang and Haiphong, and international flights with Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Seoul and several Chinese cities. An airport bus reaches the centre in about 50 minutes, and taxis run a fixed rate from the airport, says the same source.

Distances and times are approximate, from Wikivoyage (EN, ES, FR); schedules and connections change, so check them before you travel. We do not quote fares.

Nha Trang, on the south-central coast, is Vietnam's most famous seaside resort town and the country's scuba-diving centre per Wikivoyage (EN); it is livelier and more urban than Mui Ne or Phu Quoc. The climate is tropical, with an annual average temperature of 27 °C and about 2,000 mm of rain a year according to Wikipedia (DE). The city had about 422,600 inhabitants in 2019 (Wikipedia DE), before the 2025 administrative reorganisation of Khánh Hòa province.

The bay, beaches, the Po Nagar Cham towers and the marina

Nha Trang draws its charm from a broad bay ringed by mountains and islets. Traces of settlement go back to the Cham era, and the French later turned the bay into a bathing resort, says Wikivoyage (EN). The places below are illustrated; Long Son Pagoda and the cathedral are described at the end of the section.

The bay and its islands

Nha Trang Bay, its islets and white-sand beaches turned the city into a seaside destination, notes Wikivoyage (EN). Day boat tours of several islands offer snorkelling, swimming and fishing, per the same source. The Hòn Chồng promontory and the Vinpearl cable car to Hòn Tre island are two seafront landmarks.

The Po Nagar Cham towers

Four brick towers were built by the Cham between the 7th and 12th centuries to honour Yang Ino Po Ngar, mother of the kingdom, according to Wikivoyage (EN); Wikipedia (DE) places the foundation around the mid-8th century and the main tower in the 11th. The site, still a Buddhist place of worship, overlooks a fishing village and lies 20 to 25 minutes on foot from the beach.

The fishing boats

The fishing port, north of the city, shelters a small fleet: fishermen go out at night and return in the morning, according to Wikipedia (DE). Colourful boats lie at anchor in the bay in front of the hills.

The coast from above

From the air Nha Trang shows its indented coast, its tower blocks and the long breakwater of its bay. Wikivoyage (EN) sees a more urban and livelier seaside town than other resorts in the country.

The marina

A marina hosts yachts and pleasure boats, with the city and mountains as a backdrop. The many towers under construction show how fast the waterfront is growing.

Long Son Pagoda and the cathedral

Long Son Pagoda holds a 24 m white Buddha and was founded in 1963 to honour monks and nuns who died in protests against the Diem government, says Wikivoyage (EN), which warns of fake students asking for donations: entry is free. The cathedral on its hill recalls the influence of French Catholicism (Wikivoyage EN). Doc Let and Bai Dai are two other beaches, further out.

The Yersin Museum, the Khánh Hòa Museum and water puppets

The Alexandre Yersin Museum

This scientific museum honours Alexandre Yersin (1863-1943), a Swiss-born doctor who arrived in Vietnam in 1891, never went back to Switzerland and spent the rest of his life in Nha Trang, according to Wikivoyage (EN). It shows his work and equipment; the visiting rules, including the ban on photography, should be respected.

The Khánh Hòa Museum

It presents Cham statues and artefacts and objects of the region's ethnic minorities, says Wikivoyage (EN). It is a useful complement to a visit to the Po Nagar towers.

Water puppet theatre

Water puppetry is a Vietnamese folk art said to date back to the 11th century in the Red River Delta, according to Wikivoyage (EN). We do not quote fares: they change, as do opening days and hours.

Bánh căn, bánh xèo and seafood

Bánh căn

The local speciality is bánh căn, small rice cakes cooked with egg, meat or seafood and sold six at a time, says Wikivoyage (EN, ES). Bánh hỏi and bánh xèo are also on offer, more consistently through the day than in Quy Nhơn.

Markets and small eateries

The streets near the central market are lined with local eateries, each offering something different: bánh hỏi, snail soup, spring rolls, cơm tấm, phở and drinks (Wikivoyage EN). Watch out for motorbikes using the lanes as a shortcut.

Fish and the seafront

Fishing remains a major activity, according to Wikipedia (DE); fish and seafood are eaten by the sea. French and Vietnamese restaurants are plentiful too (Wikivoyage FR).

Taxis and apps, a few buses, on foot with care

Taxis and apps

Taxis and ride-hailing apps are a common option: the airport is far from the centre, and a dedicated airport bus and a fixed taxi rate are offered per Wikivoyage (EN). Always agree the price or check the meter.

Buses and two-wheelers

City buses serve points of interest, such as route 4 near the Cham towers or route 3 to Doc Let beach, according to Wikivoyage (EN). Electric bikes are widespread; rent a two-wheeler only if you are comfortable with local driving and covered by your insurance.

On foot

Walking in Nha Trang takes care: zebra crossings are little respected, says Wikivoyage (EN). Cross slowly and predictably.
