Rome in Istria
Pula's amphitheatre, in the middle of town
Pula, the largest city in Istria, sits at the southern tip of the peninsula in the northern Adriatic. It is known for one striking contrast: one of the best-preserved Roman arenas anywhere, right in the city centre, and a gateway to the beaches and coves of the Istrian coast. The Arena was begun under Augustus and enlarged under Vespasian and Titus in the 1st century.
It is counted among the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the world, and it keeps all three classical orders on its walls, four side towers and underground passages open to visitors. Today it hosts concerts and, every year in the second half of July, the Pula Film Festival.
The ancient town
Arch of the Sergii, Temple of Augustus and the Forum
| Place | What you see |
|---|---|
| Arch of the Sergii | A Roman triumphal arch of 29 to 27 BC, free to see |
| Forum | The old civic square of the Roman colony |
| Temple of Augustus | Built between 2 BC and 14 AD for Roma and Augustus |
| Archaeological Museum of Istria | Roman and prehistoric collections, entered through the double Porta Gemina |
| Roman theatre | A 2nd-century theatre on the hillside, with stage building and seating partly cut into the rock |
A city apart
Venice, Austria-Hungary and Italy
The Histri settled here around the 10th century BC, then Rome conquered the area in 177 BC and founded a colony. Byzantine and Venetian rule followed. In the 1850s Austria chose a small fishing town of about 900 people as its main war harbour, and Pula boomed, reaching 58,560 inhabitants by 1910. The naval arsenal, forts and shipyard still shape the city.
Italy held it between the wars, then Yugoslavia, and since 1991 Croatia. The city is officially bilingual in Croatian and Italian, and James Joyce taught English here in 1904 and 1905. Unlike Split or Zadar in Dalmatia, Pula belongs to a region culturally close to Italy.

The Istrian table
Truffles, olive oil and Malvazija
Istrian cooking differs from the rest of Croatia. The region is known for truffles, fish and shellfish, and olive oil, with local wines such as the white Malvazija and the red Teran, and rakija flavoured with honey or mistletoe. A daily market runs until midday beside the covered market hall of 1903.
By the sea
Coves, Brijuni and the aquarium
South of the centre, the Verudela peninsula has beaches and an aquarium inside an old Austro-Hungarian fortress. A Mediterranean monk seal nicknamed Adriana has been seen on its beaches since 2014. Further south lies Cape Kamenjak, the southernmost point of Istria, reachable by local bus.
The Brijuni National Park, 14 islands that were Tito's summer residence, is reached by boat from Fažana. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm summers and mild winters, and the sea is about 24 C at its warmest.
Around Pula
Vodnjan and Rovinj
Vodnjan lies about 15 km north and Rovinj, a picturesque harbour town, about 30 km north. Poreč is a longer day trip. Most attractions and restaurants close between October and May, so summer is the busy season.
