Croatia's port city
Rijeka, a working harbour far from the postcards
Rijeka is Croatia's main seaport and its third-largest city, with about 108,000 inhabitants at the head of Kvarner Bay. It is not a Dalmatian beach resort: it is an industrial, cosmopolitan harbour town where cranes, Habsburg-era palaces and cafe terraces share the same waterfront. That grit is exactly the appeal for travellers who want a real city rather than a resort.
The city shared the title of European Capital of Culture for 2020 with Galway in Ireland, and the programme left it with new venues, murals and a more confident image. It also sits within a few hours' drive of Trieste, Ljubljana and Zagreb, which makes it an easy add-on to a wider Adriatic trip.
Fiume, Rijeka
A city that changed flags and kept its character
| Period | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1288 | The Vinodol Law Codex is signed |
| 1719 | The port is declared a free port, setting up its rise as a trading hub |
| 19th century | The Whitehead torpedo works open here and the city becomes a major Austro-Hungarian naval and industrial centre |
| 1919 | The poet Gabriele D'Annunzio seizes the city with irregular troops and proclaims the Italian Regency of Carnaro |
| 1920 to 1924 | The Free State of Fiume exists until it is partitioned and annexed by Italy |
| 1947 and 1991 | Rijeka joins Yugoslavia, then independent Croatia |
In 1910 Italian speakers were the largest group in what was then called Fiume, ahead of Croats, Slovenes, Hungarians and Germans. That layered past explains the Austro-Hungarian National Theatre, and the minority communities that still live in the city.

Above the city
Trsat Castle and its 561 steps
Trsat Castle stands on a hill about 138 metres above the sea and looks over the city, the port and the whole bay. Its first mention dates from 1288, and it belonged to the Frankopan family from 1225 to 1670. Today it holds a gallery, a cafe and summer concerts.
You can take a bus up, or climb the 561 steps of the Petar Kruzic staircase from the centre. Next to the castle, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Trsat is the largest pilgrimage site in western Croatia.
Korzo and culture

The Korzo
The Korzo is the pedestrian main street, lined with Habsburg-era buildings and cafe terraces. The City Tower at its centre is the traditional meeting point. Nearby, the Ivan pl. Zajc Croatian National Theatre was built in 1883 to 1885 by the Viennese firm Fellner and Helmer.

Carnival
Rijeka Carnival, the winter reason to visit
Held every year since 1982, Rijeka Carnival runs from mid-January to late February, with its main parade on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. Reports mention well over 100,000 spectators and thousands of masked participants in about 150 groups. Check the exact dates of each edition before booking.
At the table
Kvarner flavours
Kvarner cooking blends Adriatic seafood with hearty central European dishes. The classic is scampi cooked na buzaru, in wine and garlic, followed by black cuttlefish risotto. For a cheap bite, bakeries sell burek. Kvarner has also been named a European Region of Gastronomy for 2026.
Beyond the city
Opatija, Krk and the islands
| Destination | Distance | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Opatija | About 20 minutes by bus | Elegant Austrian-era resort with a 12 km seaside path, the Lungomare |
| Krk | Bridge from the mainland | The island that holds Rijeka's airport; bus connections from the city |
| Cres, Losinj and Rab | By catamaran | The other Kvarner islands, served by daily boats in season |
| Risnjak National Park | North of the city | Forest and mountain landscape, with a peak of 1,528 m |
| Pula | About 107 km by road | The Roman arena and the heart of Istria |
Within the city, small coves and urban beaches such as Sablicevo and Kantrida can be reached by city bus. In summer the seawater pools at Kantrida add a swimming option with island views. The climate is mild: about 6 C on average in January and 23 to 24 C in July, with rain spread through the year and wetter autumns.
Getting there
An airport on Krk island
Rijeka Airport
Located on Krk island near Omisalj, around 30 km from the centre and reached by the Krk bridge. Traffic is largely seasonal, so Zagreb, Pula and Trieste are useful alternatives. An airport bus and taxis serve the city.
Plan two days for the city and Trsat, or three to four if you add Opatija and an island. The centre is walkable and the bus network covers the rest.
