A direct flight from Stockholm, 8 km from town

KRN

Polar night, midnight sun and northern lights

A sky that changes everything with the season

In Kiruna, the light sets the shape of your trip. Around Christmas the sun stays below the horizon, though a few hours of blue twilight remain. From late May to mid-July the midnight sun takes over. The northern lights are visible from September to March, and a short walk into the forest away from town lights is often enough. Abisko, just over an hour away by car or train, is considered one of the best aurora spots in the world, with its Aurora Sky Station.

Kiruna, northern lights above Swedish Lapland

A town built for iron ore that is moving to avoid collapse

Kiruna was built to serve the Kiirunavaara mine, run by LKAB and the largest underground iron-ore mine in the world. Its workings reach 1,365 meters deep, and the ground is shifting under the town. In 2004 it was decided that the center had to move east. The new town hall, Kristallen, was finished in 2018, the new center opened in 2022, and in August 2025 the wooden Kiruna Church, completed in 1912 to a design by Gustaf Wickman, was moved whole to the new site.

Going underground

The LKAB Visitor Centre runs guided tours that take a bus into the mountain down to the 540-meter level. It is a long visit of almost three hours with limited seats, so book ahead.

Sámi culture

Kiruna lies in Lapland, the homeland of the Sámi people, and the Sámi Parliament of Sweden has been based here since 1993. The Sámi name for the town, Giron, means ptarmigan, and the bird appears on the town's coat of arms.

The ice hotel at Jukkasjärvi, about 15 km away

Jukkasjärvi's Icehotel has been rebuilt every winter since 1989 from ice cut from the Torne River, part art exhibition, part hotel. Icehotel 365, cooled by solar power to about -5 degrees C, stays open all year, so you can see the ice art even in summer. Day visits are ticketed and free for overnight guests; check the official site for current prices, and note that payment is by card only.

Dog sledding, snowmobiles and hiking

In winter the headline activities are dog sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing and snowshoeing, with a small ski area at Luossabacken. Summer is for hiking, river rafting and trips toward Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest peak at around 2,100 meters, some 75 km from town. The Snow Festival takes place on the last weekend of January, and Kiruna has been named European Capital of Culture for 2029.
