Stockholm airports
Arlanda for international flights, Bromma for domestic ones
Stockholm Arlanda
The main international airport, about 40 km north of the center. The Arlanda Express train reaches Stockholm Central in under 20 minutes, and cheaper coaches run into town too.
Stockholm Bromma
Around 10 km west of the center, used mostly for domestic routes and a handful of European ones. Low-cost carriers also use Skavsta and Västerås, both roughly 100 km from the city.
A capital you can swim in
Fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic
Stockholm spreads across 14 islands joined by bridges, with water covering close to a third of the city area. Locals swim, picnic and commute by boat without a second thought, and that blend of capital-city energy and open water is what sets Stockholm apart from other European capitals. It is also a tech and design powerhouse, and home to the Nobel Prize ceremonies.
An archipelago of about 24,000 islands
Beyond the city lies an archipelago of roughly 24,000 islands, islets and skerries, served by Waxholmsbolaget boats. Under Sweden's right of public access, swimming and rock bathing are allowed almost everywhere. Vaxholm is about 75 minutes by boat from Strömkajen, which makes it an easy half-day escape.
Gamla Stan
The medieval Old Town, still intact in the middle of the capital
Cobbled lanes, Stortorget square and the Royal Palace
Gamla Stan grew up from the mid-13th century on the central island, and the city was founded in 1252 by Birger Jarl. Narrow cobbled lanes, ochre and red facades, Storkyrkan cathedral, the Royal Palace and Riddarholmskyrkan with its royal tombs sit within a few minutes' walk of each other. The Nobel Prize Museum stands on Stortorget itself.

Museums and metro
The Vasa, Skansen, ABBA and the world's longest art gallery
The warship that sank on her maiden voyage
The Vasa Museum on Djurgården houses a 64-gun warship that sank in 1628 and was salvaged almost intact. It is the most visited museum in Scandinavia. Nearby, Skansen combines an open-air museum with a zoo, and ABBA The Museum runs on timed entry slots, so book ahead and allow up to two hours.
A metro that doubles as an art gallery
The metro opened in 1950 and is often called the longest art gallery in the world. Kungsträdgården, Östermalmstorg and Tekniska högskolan are the standouts. Three UNESCO sites also lie within the Stockholm area: Drottningholm Palace, the Skogskyrkogården woodland cemetery and the Viking-age town of Birka.
